FIN 420: Investments - Javine
Company Financial, Industry & Investment Sources


This assignment guide was created to assist students in locating company financial, industry & investment sources to complete Dr. Javine's investment project involving the an analysis of an industry and the companies within that industry.

Students are specifically asked to assess an industry's performance over the last 5 years as well as its potential future performance over the next 1-5 years. Specific stocks are to be chosen to buy/sell and a detailed analysis of those companies provided.

The guide focuses on suggested strategies and best places to begin research efforts. For information & assistance in using any of the sources, please contact library staff:

Suggested keywords to use as additional terms in the databases listed below:
"tax benefits", "value of the dollar", economy, "business cycles", currencies, competition, products, government, regulations, regulated, mergers, acquisitions, takeover, "projected earnings"

For Industry News:

  • Click on the 'Advanced Search' graphic from the database home page.
  • Select 'News/Magazines' from the Content Area using the first pull-down menu .
  • Enter the industry's numeric NAICs code in the first search box and use the pull-down menu to select 'NAICs Code'.
    Notes:
    (1) You may need to use a broader NAICs Code -- the first 3 numbers instead of the full code.
    (2) Instead of searching by NAICs Code, you may want to search by 'Industry Description' and enter keywords that describe your industry.
  • Enter additional 'Keywords' as needed to help narrow your search.

For Company News:

  • Click on the 'Advanced Search' graphic from the database home page.
  • Select 'News/Magazines' from the Content Area using the first pull-down menu .
  • Enter your company's name in the first search box and use the pull-down menu to select 'Subject' .
  • Enter additional 'Keywords' as needed to help narrow your search.

Business Source Premier (EBSCO)

For Industry News:

  • Click on the 'Advanced Search' tab at the top of the search page.
  • In the first search box, use the pull-down menu and select 'IC NAICs Code or Description' and enter the numerical code for your industry.
  • In the remaining search boxes, use 'Select a Field (optional)' and enter any additional keywords as needed. 
  • Click the 'search' button at the top of the screen.
  • From the result list, narrow your search by choosing a term on the left side of the screen.

For Company News:

  • Click on the 'Advanced Search' tab at the top of the search page.
  • In the first search box, use the pull-down menu and select 'CO company entity' and enter the name of your company.  Note:  Company names may be entered in various ways--ex.  IBM versus International Business Machines.
  • In the remaining search boxes, use 'Select a Field (optional)' and enter any additional keywords as needed. 
  • Click the 'search' button at the top of the screen.
  • From the result list, narrow your search by choosing a term on the left side of the screen.
