Who are we?

We are a national honor society dedicated to the needs of pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-optometry, and pre-veterinary students.

What do we offer to the students?

We offer students the opportunity to participate in campus and community-based activities. We have informative speakers at each meeting representing the different areas of health care. We hope to provide our members with enjoyable activities as well as useful information that will help them in their future endeavors.

When do we meet?

The meeting are held on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m.  We meet every other week.  Look for fliers posted around campus announcing meeting times and scheduled speakers.

Where do we meet?

We meet in the USA College of Medicine Auditorium located on the first floor
.

How do you join?

Attending meetings and participating in AED activities ensures membership in AED.  Details follow.

Membership in AED

AED is a national honor society. Our chapter, Alabama Zeta, is one of the leading chapters in the nation. We extend membership to those individuals who are considered "active" in AED for 3 consecutive semesters and have a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.0 and a cumulative math/science GPA of at least 3.0. We accept new members and hold initiation for them in the spring of each year. At this time we also elect and induct new officers.

To be considered "active" for a semester, you must have paid your dues and have obtained at least 10 credits during this semester as follows:
-5 must be obtained from attending meetings (1 credit per meeting)
-3 must be earned for service activities
-2 may be received through extra activities and meetings, gift of the month, or intramurals

Each meeting you attend gives you 1 credit. Anything you participate in (community activities, campus activities, AED/BMD picnic, etc.) gives you 1 credit. Attending or playing intramurals is worth half of a credit (2 games gives you 1 credit). At each meeting, a list will be posted with everyone's name, how many credits each has, and how many of the total credits are from activities. Individuals who are active in the local chapter of AED but are not yet national members are considered affiliate members. If you have any questions regarding membership in AED, please ask our secretary, Tonya Cauley.

Dues:

Both national and affiliate members must pay dues. You may choose to pay dues by the semester ($8.00) or by the year ($15.00). The dues must be turned in by September 26 in order for a person to be considered active for the fall semester, 2002. Any questions about dues should be directed to our treasurer, Rachel Souers.

Notes:

Our chapter, Alabama Zeta, has a scrapbook each year, and we are featured in the national AED newsletter (The Scalpel). If you have any questions about these aspects of our chapter, please as our historian, Sidd Nandi.
