Instructor: Dr. Michael Spector; 251-380-2688 (or -2710); mspector@usouthal.edu

The material presented in this course will provide the student with a basic understanding of immunochemistry & immunobiology as they relate to host immune responses.  In the first part of the course, the properties of antigens/immunogens & a detailed overview of the properties & functions of the molecules, cells, tissues & organs of the immune systems will be presented.  This will provide a basis for understanding the (i) concepts of immunity & vaccination against infectious diseases, (ii) immunopathologies such as hypersensitivity reactions / allergies, immunodeficiencies & autoimmune diseases as well as (iii) rejection of tumors & tissue / organ transplants discussed in the latter portion of the course.  In addition, the student will gain a strong foundation of knowledge to draw upon so that he/she can better understand the material presented in other Biomedical Sciences courses such as Pathophysiology & Medical Microbiology.

PREREQUISITES**:   Biochemistry I (BMD 321) or equivalent or prior/special permission from Dr. Spector
