BMD 402 - Medical Microbiology (offered in Spring semester only)

The material presented in this course provides the student with an excellent understanding of the fundamental biology and pathogenicity of bacteria, viruses and fungi causing disease in humans and animals.  To achieve this objective the interrelationships / interactions between the host, the microbe and the environment along with specific mechanisms of pathogenicity will be discussed in some detail.  Also, aspects of microbial genetics, structure and physiology along with antimicrobial therapy and resistance will be presented in terms of host parasite relationships, treatment and diagnosis of disease.  The accompanying laboratory provides hands-on experience in the handling and identification of bacteria as a re-enforcement of lecture material.

 

PREREQUISITES: Immunology (BMD401) or equivalent or prior/special permission from Dr. Spector
