The obligation to teach our school children about the importance of archaeological preservation and stewardship becomes more urgent as modern construction and looters daily encroach on fragile and non-renewable archaeological sites. Awareness of our cultural heritage, as manifested in archaeological sites and artifacts, has become an increasingly important issue for archaeologists and educators alike. Many archaeological societies, professional organizations, and individuals are developing lesson plans, fieldwork opportunities, and public outreach programs. Their common quest is to familiarize and educate the public about archaeology's potential as an exciting motivator to learn about history and science, while at the same time promoting preservation and protection of archaeological sites.
