Captain William Hurd first entered the service in April 2000 enlisting in the Alabama National Guard as a 31R (Telecommunications System Maintainer and Operator) with the 711th Signal Battalion. After completion of basic training and advance individual training courses he attended Faulkner State Community College. From there, he transferred up to Auburn University where he joined the ROTC program.

While in the program, he took a leave of absence in 2003 to deploy with 711th Signal Battalion to Iraq for OIF II. Upon returning from deployment in January of 2005, he received his commission as an Infantry officer with the 1-167th Infantry Battalion “4th Alabama” in the Alabama Army National Guard through the Auburn University ROTC program.

After completing the Infantry officers basic course CPT Hurd first served as a Platoon Leader in Charlie Company 1-167th Infantry Battalion “4th Alabama”. He then volunteered to deploy to Iraq in 2007 as a Platoon Leader with 131st Cavalry. After returning from that deployment, he was

assigned to Bravo Company 1-167th Infantry “4th Alabama” as the Executive Officer. In October 2009, CPT Hurd took command of Delta Company 1-167th Infantry (Weapons Company).

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, (2nd award), Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal (2nd award), Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M device (2nd award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd award), Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge and the Meritorious Unit Ribbon.
