• Underlining more general statements helps recall of details regarding the general statement, but underlining details does not greatly aid recall of general statements.

• Colors: Some people who are very cognizant of colors benefit from using different colors for different types of material.
• More general statements would be highlighted in yellow, and supporting statements would be pink or blue.
• Younger students need to be taught how to highlight or underline or they will underline everything.

Highlighting

• Textbook authors can highlight particularly important information in several ways;
• The time tested bold face words
• The use of a different font for short passages such as direct quotes.
• Italics
• Underlined text
• Using text of a different color.
