Classification strategies

Taxonomy

A taxonomy is appropriate when knowledge is characterized by logical, law-like-- and usually observationally-based strategies.

The Gagne's Taxonomy of Learned Capabilities are used as the example below.

Typology

A typology is less logically-based than the taxonomy. Physical features such as size, shape, color, and texture are often used for classification of concrete features, but, there are less concrete typologies as well.

Consider the "types" of kids in an average high school.

•  There are preppies.

•  There are jocks.

•  There are gothic kids.

•  There are bookworms.

•  There are rappers.

•  There are good students.

•  There are bad students.

•  Some are always on time.

•  Some are habitually tardy.
