Technicians working with laboratory animals often have no expertise in the care and use of laboratory animals. The purpose of this thesis was to design a program that would introduce the research personnel to ways that would be in compliance with laws requiring proper care and use of animals. A secondary purpose was to help personnel overcome anxieties in approaching and handling these animals.
The modules include activities in which personnel could obtain hands-on experience with laboratory animals, and experience in assisting with surgery. The technicians are guided step-by-step through activities which provide a better understanding of the care and use of laboratory animals, better enabling them to meet the high standards for humane treatment of animals expected in biomedical research today.
