Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery/Sports Medicine

Under the direction of Albert W. Pearsall, IV, M.D., this outstanding Fellowship opportunity offers the successful candidate a diverse and broad-based sports medicine and reconstruction experience.

Program Information
The University of South Alabama Sports Medicine and Reconstruction Fellowship is a dynamic 12-month curriculum that includes arthroplasty of the shoulder, elbow and knee, bone and soft tissue reconstruction, cartilage transplantation, and treatment of bone and soft tissue of the upper and lower extremeties (not including spine and pelvis).

The progressive approach and development of this Fellowship opportunity provides the participant with the most up-to-date training available with hands-on instruction.

Training Facilities
The University of South Alabama Medical Center, Infirmary West, and the USA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provide the environment and facilities for acquiring the knowledge, skills, clinical judgement, and approach essential to the practice of orthopaedic sports medicine and adult reconstructive surgery. In addition to numerous outpatient and inpatient operating rooms, resource facilities include: biomechanics laboratory, cadaver and arthroscopic skills laboratory, athletic training room facilities, physical therapy facilities, complete medical library and computer services.

How to Apply
One Fellow per year is accepted into the Sports Medicine and Reconstruction Fellowship.

The following requirements apply:

•Board eligible or Board certification in orthopaedic surgery
•Fully qualified for medical licensure in the State of Alabama

Fellowship Application Form

Application deadline for training beginning on August 1 of each year is October 31 of the previous year. Personal invitations to interview will be extended to selected candidates no later than December 1. Interviews will be conducted mid-January.

Dr. Pearsall currently serves as a Professor and the Director of the Section of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service within the USA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Pearsall received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH and completed orthopaedic surgery residency training at University of Chicago Hospitals.

Dr. Pearsall's advanced training experience includes a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Research Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC and a Shoulder and Trauma Fellowship with the AO Group in Hanover, Germany. Dr. Pearsall is fully certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is nationally and internationally recognized for his numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
