The University of South Alabama, College of Medicine Summer Research Program is a 10-week program that allows medical students to gain a better appreciation for biomedical research and the contribution it makes to the applied science that is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. All summer research students receive training in the safe handling of radioisotopes and certification in radiation safety training. A call for summer research proposals (first week of each January) is distributed to all College of Medicine faculty inviting them to submit research proposals that provide a quality research experience for incoming freshman and rising sophomore medical students. The merits of the projects are judged by the Student Research Committee based on a testable hypothesis or objective, basic research methodology and/or clinical study design that can be performed within the 10-week period and that will achieve the specific aims of the study. Proposals are evaluated on the hypothesis, study design, and educational value to the student. The summer research program offers a variety of research projects ranging from clinical to basic science in nature.

These awardees receive a commemorative plaque and a $100 cash award. The awardees are also invited to present their research findings at the National Student Research Forum held each year in Galveston at the University of Texas Medical Branch.   Keynote speaker was metabolic endocrinologist, Dr. Robert Kreisberg, clinical professor at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Dr. Kreisberg stands as one of Alabama’s most influential medical educators – spending the majority of his professional career between the state’s two medical schools. His seminar was entitled “Bedside to Bench and Back Again: Cholesterol as an Example, The Beat Goes on”.

The call for proposals for the 2008 Summer Medical Student Research Program will be posted in January 2008. We look forward to your support of next year's program.
