Electives at the University of South Alabama

Elective course slots are available for students from U.S. medical schools who have finished at least one year of clinical work. However, South Alabama students have first priority in selecting elective rotations. Because of the timing of preparing the schedules of our own students, we will begin to take action on applications from extramural students for an upcoming year around the first of June. Ultimate approval to study at South Alabama rests with the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in consultation with the department in which a student requests to study. In practice, if a slot exists in an elective during the block requested, and if the application process is complete, the request will be approved.

Electives Catalog: Get the course catalog. Not all courses are open to visiting students.

Rotations: Our electives are of four weeks duration, or multiples thereof. Block dates are listed below:
June 30- July 25, 2008
July 28 - August 22, 2008
August 25 - September 19, 2008
September 22 - October 17, 2008
October 20 - November 14, 2008

November 17 - December 12, 2008*

February 16 - March 13, 2009
March 16 - April 10, 2009
April 13 - May 8, 2009

* Five week block. Student and Course Director determine which week is to be taken for vacation.

(VISITING STUDENTS CAN APPLY AFTER MAY 31)

We encourage visiting students to conform to our block schedule. We limit all visiting students to a maximum of two months on site.

Students are responsible for cost of meals and securing living accommodations.

Malpractice Insurance: Professional liability coverage is required and must be verified by the student's home school.

Housing: The responsibility for finding housing remains with the student. For campus housing contact DoRann Owens, (251) 460-6436 or or Brookley Center (located closer to USAMC Hospital site) (251) 431-6410.

Transportation: Each visiting student must arrange his/her transportation (including to and from the airport). Public transportation in Mobile is very limited. An automobile is a necessity.

Health Insurance Coverage: Student health insurance is mandatory. Documentation must be provided.

Evaluation: The student must provide an evaluation form from your school for use by our faculty; otherwise one of ours will be used. Take the completed form with you upon completion of the rotation.

Applicant Instructions:

1. Print and complete the Visiting Student Application (pdf file)
2. Print and complete the USA Immunization Certificate (pdf file). Obtain required school officials’ signatures for certification on both documents and send via regular U.S. mail (along with documentation of your student health insurance and your school's documentation of your professional liability [malpractice] verification) to:

3. Review the University of South Alabama College of Medicine Visiting Student Requirements. Failure to provide the completed application within the four weeks will result in the visitor's name being removed from the course roster and the slot becoming available for other students. When an application has been approved, confirmation will be sent to the student by e-mail. A copy of the acceptance confirmation should be provided by the student to his/her school.

Visiting Student Requirements

The University of South Alabama has agreed to follow the guidelines for visiting students subscribed to by most U.S. medical schools. These rules place a modest burden on the student during the application process, but result in a positive experience while visiting our institution. Please be advised that a student must:

1. Be matriculated at an LCME accredited school and be actively progressing toward the M.D. degree at that school.
2. Have permission from the parent school to study at the University of South Alabama. This permission is given by the Dean or his/her designee of the parent school on the application form.
3. Not replace a University of South Alabama student in any given course, but be assigned a slot in a course where a vacancy exists.
4. Not be considered to be matriculated at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
5. Receive academic credit from the parent school in order to study at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
6. Pursue an academic program at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine for no more than eight (8) weeks. Only elective courses in the fourth year of the curriculum are available to Visiting Students.
7. Have successfully completed basic clinical rotations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, and Psychiatry.
8. Have completed a program on universal precautions ensuring the appropriate handling of blood, tissues, and body fluids.
9. Have completed a program in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ensuring the appropriate handling of protected health information.
10. Forward proof of health insurance coverage with the Visiting Student's application. A visiting student is NOT covered by University of South Alabama College of Medicine student health insurance by virtue of enrollment as a Visiting Student.
11. Provide evidence of having all immunizations required of students enrolled at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
12. Be covered by malpractice insurance. Professional Liability Insurance (malpractice) is available for $45.00 to the Visiting Student who is not covered by his/her own school's policy. The fee must be paid in the Office of Student Affairs and Medical Education at the Hospital prior to beginning the rotation.
13. Make his/her own arrangements for housing and transportation.
14. Have a short white coat and a stethoscope.

Submit any questions to the Electives Coordinator.
