  Transfer Credits

Students transferring to the University from foreign post-secondary institutions must submit a detailed course syllabus from which to evaluate transfer credit. Advanced Placement credit is available from a number of worldwide sources; contact the Office of International Admissions and Student Services for details.

Your transcripts will be evaluated quickly, right on campus. We are already familiar with most of the educational systems of the world, and many of the institutions from which we receive international students are entered onto an automated evaluation system. You will receive prompt service for your transfer credit evaluation. See below for transfer and other required forms.

A student may secure a professional evaluation of academic credentials at his/her own expense. Course-by-course professional evaluation is required of transfer students accepted into the College of Education and students applying to the professional component of any program in the College of Allied Health Professions.

The Office of International Admissions and Student Services welcomes all new international students to the University of South Alabama, and we hope to make you feel at home during your study in Mobile, Alabama.

Please complete the request form with all of the necessary details.

We will make every effort to have someone there to assist you upon your arrival.  You should receive confirmation of the arrangement prior to your departure.

  Housing

For students who intend to live on campus, you may apply for housing after you have been admitted to the University. Instructions for how to apply for on campus housing are available at: http://southalabama.edu/housing/apply.shtml. For additional information about USA’s Housing and Residence Life, please visit: http://www.southalabama.edu/housing/

Off campus housing is available in the vicinity of the campus within walking distance. The accommodations around campus are nearly always at full capacity, so plan your housing arrangements as soon as possible. Arrive several days prior to orientation to finalize housing arrangements if staying off campus.

Students are responsible for arranging for their own housing accommodations. Be sure to make your housing accommodations early before the semester begins!

  Medical Insurance

The University requires all international students on non-immigrant visas to purchase University of South Alabama's medical insurance coverage for themselves and any dependents.

We are aware that the medical services here in the United States are different from those most of you are accustomed to. Therefore, the University of South Alabama offers a service that few, if any, other institutions provide in terms of health insurance.

We have experienced staff that assist you in filing your insurance claim forms and help you to better understand the procedure. We process all insurance claims for the international students.
USA is one of the only Universities in the United States that submits insurance claims for the students--just give us the bills!

  Port of Entry Procedures

New F-1 VISA students may enter the United States up to 30 days prior to the start date indicated on their I-20 (item 5). Do not attempt to enter the U.S. after the arrival date on the I-20. Please e-mail the Office of International Student Services (internationalservices@southalabama.edu) immediately if you will not be able to report by the arrival date.

Keep the following items on hand for the US Port of Entry:

  • SEVIS I-20
  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of your expected stay)
  • VISA

You may also be asked to present the following:

  • proof of funding for at least one year of study (financial affidavit/bank statement, scholarship letter, etc.)
  • Verification of your student status (For example, your letter of admission)
  • SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-797)

Additional information about Port of Entry procedures is available by visiting:
http://www.ice.gov/sevis/students/ or http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/study_exchange/exchange_arrivals.xml

Please be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry into the U.S. The US Customs and Border Protection officials have the authority to deny admission.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT I-94 ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE RECORD:
US Customs and Border Patrol announced the automation of Form I-94 in April, 2013. This means it will no longer be necessary for affected visitors to complete a paper form when arriving to the United States by air or sea. US CBP will continue to stamp your passport with your date and status of entry. You will be need to retrieve and print an electronic record of your I-94 after arrival online at: http://www.cbp.gov/i94 if your Port of Entry has automated this process. For more information about the automation of the I-94, please visit: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/i-94_instructions/i94_rollout.xml and http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/newsroom/fact_sheets/travel/i94_factsheet.ctt/i94_factsheet.pdf

Registration

Registration--making course selections and enrolling in classes--occurs prior to the beginning of each term.

All students use PAWS (Personal Access Web System) for their registration. PAWS is a web accessible, dynamic, and interactive computer system that provides services to students, faculty, and staff of USA based on their relationship to the University.

Important changes and messages will be posted to this site weekly. Check this site often!

Registration is not complete until all fees have been paid and all admissions documents and examinations finished. Failure to satisfy any admission or registration requirements is sufficient cause for dropping a student from all his classes.

International students are required to maintain full-time status while enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher learning. USA requires a minimum of 12 semester hours for undergraduates and 6 semester hours for graduates to be classified as a full-time student.

  Orientation

New international students are required to participate in an orientation program prior to their first semester at the University.
  The program provides information concerning:

  • services available
  • adjustment to the academic, social and cultural environment
  • immigration matters
  • local sights and activities
  • student organizations
  • health insurance
  • safety and security provisions
  • academic programs and advising
