STUDENT AND ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENTS

2011-2012

 

French

Tessi Brumley  has been accepted into the Teaching Assistant Program in France. She will spend the year 2012-2013 teaching English at secondary level in Isbergues in the Nord Pas de Calais region. (Spanish major, French minor 2009)

 

Heather Hardin is pursuing a Juris Doctorat (JD) degree At Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio. (French and International Studies, 2008)  

 

Alex St. Paul was awarded a Rotary scholarship and is currently studying in Louvai, Belgium. .

 

Will Sweeney is teaching English in China. (French 2009)

 

 

German

 

Colleen Schmittz received a teaching assistantship and a scholarship to pursue a PH.D. in theoretical linguistics in Georgetown University starting from Fall 2012. (German 2010)

 

Russian

Alexa Coccaro has been selected to teach English in Vladimir, Russia at the America House. (Russian, 2012)

Spanish

 

Kristin Blosser received a Benjamin A. Gillman International scholarship to study in Lima, Peru during the spring 2012 semester. (Spanish major, junior)

William Crittendon received the USA Nowlin-Caldwell & PAWS Around the World Endowment Scholarship to study in Madrid, Spain during summer 2012. (Biology major, Spanish minor)

John Havard accepted a tenure-track position as as an Asssitant Professor of English at the University of Auburn, Montgomery after completing his Ph.d. from the University of Rochester. His disertation was titled, Hispanicism: Spanish-ness, Liberalism, and National Identity in U.S. Literature, 1787-1861. ( English, spanish and Philosophy major, 2004)

Laura Hosford has been accepted as a teacher at Houston Christian High School, where she will be teaching AP Spanish as well as coaching the school's girls' varsity soccer team. (Spanish major, 2010)

Patrick Houston interned with Senator Jeff Sessions for a month this summer in Washington D.C. (Spanish major, 12)

Brandon X. Kirkwood received a Benjamin A. Gillman International scholarship to study in San José, costa Rica ( Spanish major, sophomore).

Chase Krebs will attend the Graduate program in Linguistics at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaigne (Spanish major, 12)

Monica Whatley was accepted into the Masters program in Demography at Florida State University, and will be starting classes from fall 2012. ( Mathematics major, Spanish minor, 2011)

 

2010-2011

French

 

Cameron Gibson received the 2011 USA James and Ivel Caldwell Scholarship to study in France during the summer of 2011. (French major)

Elizabeth McDonald was USA’s summer internship recipient with the Washington Center Institute. (History major, French minor) 

Jeff Harris, who graduated from USA in 2008, got his MA in French in the spring, from Ohio State University, and was accepted in a PhD program in history at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His area of specialization and doctoral research will be the history of Quebec. (French and History major, 2009)

 

German

 

Christopher Stansbury received the USA Nowlin-Caldwell & PAWS Around the World Endowment Scholarship and will be in Worms, Germany, for fall 2011. (Business major, German minor)

Josh McFarland interned with Senator Sessions for a month this summer in Washington DC. (German major)

Hanne Anderson just finished an MA in International Peace and Security, which is run out of the War Studies Department at King's College London. At USA she received (Dual degree student: International Studies and History major, German minor, 2010)

 

Russian

 

Bart Brennan has enlisted in the US Navy and will be studying language at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. (Russian major)

 

Spanish

 

Patricia Carter was the recipient of the nationally renowned Pat Tillman Military Scholarship. (Spanish and International Studies major)

Megan Heatherly was selected to participate in the UCUR Program this summer: her research project focused on the representation on Latin American immigrants in Spanish cinema. (Spanish and International Studies major)

Kristin Blosser was selected to participate in the UCUR Program this summer: her research project focused on the influence of Louis Carroll on the writings of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. (Spanish major)

Ayesha Jaleel was admitted to University of Alabama, Birmingham’s Medical school and started her studies there in the Fall of 2011. She will also serve as a board member for the Caldwell Scholarship. (Spanish and Biomedical sciences major)

Chase Krebbs worked as an interpreter and translator in the relief programs for tornado victims in Tuscaloosa, AL, in April 2011.(Spanish major, Meteorology minor) 

Monica Whatley accepted a position with the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C. as a data analyst. She is currently working with the Bureau’s Import/Export section, where she uses her Spanish skills on a daily basis in her job. (Math major, Spanish minor)

Amaury Figueroa, a former student of the Spanish section, published a Spanish novel titled, La escuela. (Spanish major)

 

Lesser Taught Languages Program (LTLS)

 

EriK Gabriel, a student of Japanese in the Department of Foreign Languages, received two prestigious scholarships: the National Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project and the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Both of these awards help to fund Erik’s fall 2011 semester abroad in Japan. (International Studies major) 

Maggie Tarver, a student of Arabic in the Department of Foreign Languages, also won a Gilman Scholarship. She is studying Arabic (among other things) in Morocco. (International Studies major)
