WELCOME!
Congratulations on your decision to enroll at the University of South Alabama. I am confident that your time at USA will be enjoyable and will provide you with the necessary skills to be successful in whatever career you subsequently choose. As head of the Russian section of the Department of Foreign Languages, I invite you to consider the challenge of studying Russian at the University of South Alabama. |

The study of Russian at the university level will open up a whole new world for you. Aside from being a stimulating intellectual adventure, it can lead to a host of exciting and meaningful study and employment opportunities -- be it in international business, the U.S. Department of State, in a non-profit organization, the Peace Corps, journalism, interpreting and translating, education, the arts, the military, technology, or computer science.
Russian is one of the world’s four most
widely used languages and is spoken by over 300 million
people, not just in Russia itself, but throughout Eastern
Europe and all over the territories of the former Soviet
Union. Not only a language with a rich cultural heritage,
i.e. the language of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov,
Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov, Russian also ranks with
English and Chinese as one of the three most significant
world languages, with over 28% of the world’s scientific
literature produced in Russian today. As such, Russian is
the major language of a huge emerging technological market
and, without doubt, a language that is destined to remain
essential in the
21st century as the pace and scope of the exchange of people, ideas, and technology grows.

I have taught Russian since 1983 at Duke University,
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tulane
University, and now at USA. For the past 20 years I have worked as an interpreter for the US Department of State, Department of Energy, and the Pentagon, and in that capacity have interpreted at three US-Soviet summit meetings under Presidents Reagan and Bush. As a scholar I have published numerous articles and two monographs on Soviet literature and cultural politics. I have always been an enthusiastic teacher and have guided numerous students to a mastery of the Russian language. In 2001 I published and dedicated to my former students a Russian language textbook, Advanced Russian Tabloid Reader (Slavica Press), which helps students learn to read rapidly and efficiently, while making the process as enjoyable as possible by including in the texts a healthy dose of humor.
Many of my alumni have participated in study abroad programs in Russia, and have traveled to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, and other sites to enhance their command of the language. My graduates have gone on to Area Studies Programs at U.S. graduate schools, have taken positions in international companies, and have served as military attachés and area experts.
