The University of South Alabama Library is home to two unique art galleries. The third floor gallery, the main exhibition space, is a bright, open area with ample wall space and twelve display cases. At any time, the third floor art gallery and display cases can feature watercolors, acrylics, oils, displays, and photography. Local artists as well as USA faculty and students, including the faculty of the department of Visual Arts, are featured regularly. The gallery has also featured artwork by children in area schools and the Helen Keller art show which travels throughout the state annually. The first floor gallery exhibits photography and the artwork of area children and students.
The library is home to both an original Rembrandt etching and a copy of a self-portrait of the artist. The works of Josef Hascek, Linda Hall, Susan Hales, and Nikolia Polyushenko are found in locations throughout the library. The library's permanent collection is a diverse and interesting group of works that represent different periods and styles of fine art.
Dr. Richard Wood, Dean of University Libraries, began the Library Art Gallery program in 2003. The first show was held in March 2003, and featured photography by retired library faculty member Joaquin Holloway. Student work by Susan Hales and Theresa Lepre were also shown. The work of these artists is frequently seen in local and regional art shows. The galleries have had ten to twelve shows each year since 2003. |
