Officer Reports

President Greene - Today I met with Joel Montgomery and Dean Mitchell concerning the JagTran and changes for the next school year. Once school gets started we need to report and problems and try to improve this as a continuous process. Take a look and see the changes from this year to last year. Also on the agenda we are doing the 2nd round of appropriations. This will be end of the appropriation process for the summer. We also need to cancel next week’s meeting for the 4th of July. Tomorrow is another day for freshman orientation. We need more people. Tomorrow morning we need people at 8:30 and 6:15 for the spirit session at the Mitchell Center. This is a good way to get office hours. You have until the end of July to do your hours. On day two is the question and answer session from 9:30 - 11:30. If you are in a greek organization please come. Most importantly come for SGA tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Bryd - I will be passing around a sign up sheet for tomorrow for in the morning and spirit session.

Vice President Byrd - Saturday 20th August. We will leave at 5 pm is the day of the retreat. Sunday is all day. We will provide everything and transportation. Not attending is an automatic 2 absences deducted from your fall unless you have an approved excuse. Working is not an excuse. Dress Code: For spirit session jeans and a nice shirt is ok. For other things you need to wear business attire when you are wearing your name tag. At the morning sessions wear your name tag and something nicer. Don’t have another organization on.

Davis - New senators do not have name tags.

Byrd - If you are representing SGA be presentable. Whenever we open the floor for old business lets talk about Bass Fishing and the Indian Association first because they will take less time than SAAC. Let’s be courteous for those students.

Treasurer Lawkis - It is the last night for summer appropriations. Everyone should have a sheet. Alan will do role call. The first 5 are mass appropriations. They are free to leave after it is voted on. If you are traveling and flying then keep you ticket stubs. We will then discuss Bass Fishing and the Indian Student Assoc. There was nothing wrong with their packets they just did not attend the first meeting. The last thing we need to do is the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. We have the Assistant Athletic Director for South with us. They are going to talk about a co-sponsorship. I have made two new spread sheets. If you ever want to know how much money we have just let me know.

Attorney General Arditi - First: Aug 22nd College Colors day. That is the 1st day of class. We travel to Montgomery and take pictures with the mascot at the state courthouse. No specific times yet. Possibly at 8 in the morning.

Greene - It is a great experience. You get to meet the governor and other constitutional officers as well as other SGA representatives.

Sells - Is this like jag it out or more professional.

Greene - Yes it is professional attire.

Arditi - I am still looking for people for the STARS committee. The retreat is Aug 6 7 8 in Destin, FL. It is another way to help out with higher education. I need to know by the end of tonight because I need to get the information in this week. The next thing is I am looking for 4 more defense attorneys. If you have recommendations have them give me a call. July 25th Higher Education meeting in President’s Office with the Higher Education Partnership as well as Happy Fulford. It will be at noon. We will be discussing student advocacy as well as other things related to higher education. It is business attire. Please let me know if you are interested.

Greene - Happy Fulford is like our school’s lobbyist. He is a great person to get to know.

Chief Justice Wolf - Stay after the meeting if you are attending tomorrow. We need to make many more bags. You will get office hours. We have stopped doing ticket appeals since we are moving out of the SC. Tell anyone who has a problem to come see me. I need 4 more associate justices so please tell people.

Student at Large Fallon - We are going to be working with Alex Whiles and the Freshman Recruitment chair to get new freshmen more involved in SGA. We are planning some SGA sponsored events for athletics. Let me know if you have ideas.

Greene - I also am considering a freshman council that I will be bringing up at our next meeting. It can get more freshmen involved and possibly have them run for senate seats in the spring.

Wilson - We need people on rules committee and government affairs. Please remember that you have to have 15 hours for the summer by the end of July. If you need help with hours let me know. You must be on at least one committee. We need other people at orientation.

Greene - Not doing office hours will mean you may not get your stipend and may also be removed from SGA so please do them they are important.

Dean Mitchell - Update on the Student Center. Student Center is closed for internal renovation. As far as where we will be located starting next week it will be in the Old Rec Center. It will be called the Academic Success Center. The math lab is open to all students. We will be there for probably the next year and a half. SGA will have  a space in that building as well as Jaguar productions and other offices. Movers are moving daily. Move should be completed by next Thursday.

Pearson - I move to close the floor for Bass Fishing. Move to approve the appropriations of $2,000.

Motion passes

Sells - Reminder: please be aware of abstaining. If you are apart of a group you are not allowed to vote. Vice President Byrd will ask for abstentions and it will be noted. Please do this.

New Business

Weatherly - I move to open the floor for mass appropriations. The total is $5,436.

Abstentions listed

Motion passes.

Sells - I move to open the floor for the Student Academic Advising Committee co sponsorship. Co-sponsorships allow us to bend the rules. We can exceed the limit of $2,000 and pay for other things like food. They are requesting $2,600 for T-Shirts going to the student athletes. There requested for 400 shirts. The had Jag #s for 388. They are only asking for T-Shirts.

Chastain - I have never heard of you and I’m not sure anyone else has but what have you done in the past for South?

Representative for the Student Academic Advising Committee - We have not been registered for many reasons. Moving forward as of last year I realized the first thing we needed to do was become registered. We have 13 programs and 17 sports. We have 26 total representing the committee from every sport. We are a voice for the student athletes on campus. It is a mandate by the NCAA that we have a SAAC. We have just recently been active. We have been involved in a lot of community service. We want to do something big with SGA. As far as our involvement I as a staff member I plan to make sure that we do more with SGA and other student organizations. We want to close the gap. We want to do something big with SGA. The schedules of athletes are very brutal but we will be more involved.

Adams - Regarding Rules: Does it have to be available for all students as a whole.

Sells - T-Shirts becomes more hairy.  Usually, T-Shirts fall strictly under appropriations. But in this situation like Outlaws we can provide other things as well. It is not outside the rules.

Davis - In order to be in a co-sponsorship do they have to be a registered organization for three semesters?

Sells - Yes they do.

Rep - Yes, we have been registered it has just been a long process. I know that we requested 400 T-shirts but we have some kids who have been dropped off in the past few weeks as well as other kids in junior college who are not yet accounted for. So there are a few reasons as to why we requested 400 shirts but only have 388 Jag #s and that is because there is a certain way athletes are coded with their acceptance into South. It is because of the setup that explains why we have requested extra shirts.

Kennedy - I just want to thank Mr. Fields and Mr. McGee for being here and I think we should give them a round of applause. As a former college athlete I can say that these guys don’t have a lot of time. The fact that they are taking the time to form a committee to help our athletes and our school I think that is a very respectable thing. These are good guys and will take care of the missing jag numbers.

Tevepaugh - What is the purpose of getting these shirts? Are they an incentive of a way of bringing awareness to your group?

Rep - These shirts will allow for students on campus and the community to see what we are all about. Citizenship, Graduation, Championships is our philosophy. We have been under the radar for a while but we are trying to do as much as we can as fast as we can and we are willing to help as much as we can. This is a partnership and at the end of the day it is all about South Alabama.

Fallon - Is your organization named on the shirt? If you are trying to bring awareness you should probably have your name on the shirt. Also, can approve shirts that are available for all the students?

Coleman - The Lowdown states that an event must be open to all students. However, this is not an event it is different. Since it is T-shirts and a co-sponsorship it does not say that the T-shirts must be available to all students but it does have to promote your group and the University so you do need to put your group on there somehow.

Fallon - If you are only providing shirts for your athletes then how am I supposed to know by seeing that shirt that the person wearing it is an athlete. If they are in my class then I may not even know about them.

Rep - Well that is part of what gap we are trying to fix. You say that you may not know them. Well then get to know them. This is the gap that we are trying to fill.

Byrd - It is a great idea and I feel the same way as Cord. I may sit in class all day long and someone may not know that I’m vice president or that I was a former senator for their college. So it is the same for us when we wear our SGA shirts. I am sure that I been in contact with athletes and just not known that they were athletes. So I do think that it is a great idea but the name must be on the shirt and maybe this can open the communication line.

Byrd - In order to avoid extra costs by adding the name lets add the name to the front or back of the shirt and we can go ahead and approve the cost.

Beovich - I move to close the floor on the discussion of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Sells - Objection, Just to let you know. Based on the pricing there was also discussion on the bowling party which included food and also that is why we went the co-sponsorship route. If we move it to appropriations at $2,000 we could get 307 shirts and remove the SGA which would take some money off but the name still needs to be on there. If we did it that way we could not the the co-sponsorship. That would use your $2,000 for the whole year. But we can always still do the co-sponsorship.

Rep - My speech has been that we want the support the SGA and work with them so I would not want to remove the co-sponsorship.

Greene - What we might could do is approve 10% over the cost and what is over the reimbursement the will put back in the general fund.

Davis - It takes each general students initiative to do stuff like this. One thing we can do with the price is approve the co-sponsorship pending approval of a revised t-shirt proof with SAAC on it. So that way they don’t have to continue with this process.

Byrd - Ok, so the way this will work is we will go ahead and appove the money pending revised proof to Allen. As long as it is on there and once we have it seen you have the money. If that is ok. We want to make sure that the amount is covered so if they try and order 400 shirts they are only going to get money covered for 388.

Rep - That sounds fine

Beovich - The floor is closed.

Davis -  I move to co-sponsor for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee $2,860.

Motion passes.

Rep - Thank you

Lawkis - Thank you

Byrd - 4th of July is next Monday.
