Roll Call
Senators Absent: Sells,
Scarborough
Approval of the Minutes
-Minutes from last meeting approved by acclimation.
Officer Reports
President Greene
– October 17th is the dinner at
President Moulton’s house, and as you know next Monday is Fall Break so we
won’t have a meeting then. In a couple of weeks we might set aside about
$1600.00 and I’ll meet with Academic Affairs and Police Department to keep the
library open for extended hours during final exams. The $1600 would be if we
paid the entirety of the cost but we’ll be splitting the cost with Academic
Affairs. Hopefully it will just be $800 but just keep that in mind if it’s
something you would be interested in. We looked through the applications we
have for the open Senate positions and we have narrowed it down to five or six
for freshmen and six or seven for Arts and Sciences. I’ve been contacting the
people applying to try to set up times for interviews. We’ve only had one
person apply for CIS but we’ve also had recommendations for people so we’re
trying to contact them.
Vice President
Byrd – Last Thursday we met to talk about
Senate projects. I know it was last minute and a lot of you couldn’t come and
it wasn’t mandatory. But what I’m thinking is every week we could meet at a
different time. You wouldn’t be required to come to all of them but just on
different days and times so that whoever could come could be there. I got some
really good ideas and it was productive so I will be posting on the Facebook
page for next week some times. Have a good week.
Treasurer Lawkis –
Appropriations are over, thank you to everyone who helped. I would like to do
something for all of you that helped with appropriations. I know you guys have
had a lot of pizza already so maybe we could do something else – I’m up for
whatever. Maybe we could do a wing night or something. I got an e-mail from
Athletics Administration, they want us to partner up
with the outlaws and Athletic Marketing. We’re looking for the Georgia State
game on October 22nd they want to see how we could help either with
tickets or a bus. They’re trying to get as many students as they can to that
game to represent South Alabama. I looked into it today and just one bus holds
55 people and is about $2400.00. If we get more students to go the discount
rate is $13.00 a ticket. So I wanted to ask you guys, being that next week is
Fall Break and the following week is October 13th, which only gives
us about ten days to advertise. So just think about if there’s a dollar amount
to commit to. If you do one bus plus a $13.00 ticket it’s about $70 a person. So
if we say we’ll give $1000 or $1500 that will make it $25 a student to go to
the game which is a pretty good deal. Think about that, I will go and meet with
Travis Toth later this week to talk about what we
want to do. If you want to do X amount of tickets at $13 a piece or pay for a
bus. We don’t want to get in the business of collecting money and managing
tickets like we do parking passes, so I think the best thing for us to do would
be to give set dollar amount and be done with it. So just think about it.
Attorney General Arditi – No report.
Chief Justice
Wolf – We need to swear in David Nesbit,
our new College of Medicine senator. He was elected by the College of Medicine
student body so he does not need to be discussed.
Pro Tem Wilson- Just remember to do your office
hours.
Fallon
–
October 3rd and 4th is Fall Break. We’re looking at
November 2nd for the IPC dinner, so if any of you are presidents of
a club or know someone who is president of a club make sure they know that it
is tentatively November 2nd at 6:00 pm.
Committee Reports
Pelonia –
Homecoming is in two weeks. I have sign-up sheets for the events so please try
to sign up for at least two or three or maybe all. They are in 30 minute
increments and I know ya’ll have breaks between classes so please come and help
and give SGA a good name. I also have the Homecoming shirt list so if any of
you want shirts I’ll pass that around too. You don’t have to pay me tonight but
I want the money due by Wednesday. They’re only $8.00. You can also get a lot
of office hours during Homecoming.
Chastain
–
The only excuse for missing a meeting is a doctor’s note,
that is the only one that is excused without the Rules Committee having
to meet. We are only accepting written doctor’s notes turned in to me.
Beovich –
I will get in touch with the people who volunteered for First Year Council and
we will hopefully have a meeting next week.
Purnell –
Governmental Affairs will be having a meeting on Wednesday October 5th
at 10:30 am in the SGA office. We have myself and one
other senator on the committee but we will need more senators for next semester
so please try to make that meeting.
President
Al-Greene – You have to be on at least one
committee.
Pelonia –
There’s a Homecoming meeting this Wednesday at 4:00, so those who are not on a
committee can join my committee.
Special Orders
Dr.
Mitchell – For the October 17th dinner at President
Moulton’s home please try to carpool. The dinner will start at 6:00 pm. The
president’s office has your mailing addresses and invitations will go to your
permanent addresses. Directions for that are forthcoming but the more people
that carpool the better. Again, it’s 6:00 pm on the 17th.
New Business
October 17th SGA meeting was
cancelled with no negative votes or abstentions.
Floor opened for discussion of partnering
with Athletic Administration for away game.
Fallon
–
Has everyone had time to think about what would be an appropriate amount to
give?
Lawkis –
Obviously if I meet with them next week I want to be able to have something to
offer.
Reeves
–
Have we had an interest expressed by the students?
Fallon
–
Yes they have.
President
Al-Greene – My freshman year when the basketball
team went to the tournament they got some buses to go to Birmingham.
I don’t know what we paid for that, but it’s something that has been done in
the past.
Fallon
–
The number that we’ve come up with is $1500 and that would set the price for a
student to take the bus there and a ticket for $25.00. That’s what each student
would pay for transportation which I think is really good to get to Atlanta.
Does anyone have any objections to that number?
Senator
Adams – That’s only for 55 people though, correct?
Fallon
–
It is, and if we want to have more than one bus that’s going to raise the price
for student tickets or we could give more.
Treasurer
Lawkis – They just want to know
if we’re interested at all, so I will let them know that we are.
Ramsey
–
How much money do we have left over from appropriations?
Treasurer
Lawkis – Right now we are at
$21,100 for Fall.
Vice
President Byrd – Let’s do a poll vote. Everyone who
would be interested raise your hand.
Senator
–
Keep in mind that if you raise your hand you need to actually promote this to
students.
Treasurer
Lawkis – Okay so I’ll get back
to you guys about what they want.
Floor opened for discussion of extending
Library hours during finals.
President
Al-Greene – Basically it would mean that during the
week of final exams the library would stay open until 2:00 am. It would be
roughly $1600 to keep it open 3 hours for the ten days and we could maybe split
it with Academic Affairs.
Beovich –
Is this an extension beyond what they normally have?
President
Al-Greene – Right now they don’t have extended
hours during finals.
Maxime –
So this is the week of finals?
President
Al-Greene – Yes it would be that week of finals and
the weekend before.
Maxime –
Maybe you could also do the week leading up to finals.
President
Al-Greene – That’s something we could discuss as
well
Fishel –
Is this just for the main library or for both of them?
President
Al-Greene – I would think just the main library.
Purnell –
Maybe we should have both libraries open that week; I know a lot of medical
students and Allied Health students use the BMD library as well.
President
Al-Greene – It’s not so much paying for the staff
to keep it open, we would need two police officers for the extended hours for
safety reasons.
Fishel –
Could they just block off one of the entrances to the main library so they
would only need one per building?
President
Al-Greene – I’ll bring that up as well.
Fallon
–
Could we not subsidize some of that cost by having Java City set up in the main
library and sell coffee to the people who will be there for long hours?
President
Al-Greene – I’ll definitely ask about that.
Nesbit was confirmed as a College of
Medicine Senator and sworn into office.
Announcements
Pelonia –
Again, I know I’ve said this already but please sign up for something for
Homecoming. It’s only 30 minutes at a time.
President
Al-Greene – If you want to work on a project but
are having trouble getting it off the ground, feel free to talk to me or Jessica
or Nina or Cord so we can help you get started.
Beovich –
If you want to help with First Year Council but have not given me your number
please come see me after the meeting.
Adjourn.
