President Gardner – High Education is coming up. Senator Hall and Hill will be attending and we need a few more senators to attend

Vice President Proctor – has been sick this week and if anyone needs her just to call her. Proctor introduces guest speaker, the multi cultural affairs chair

Multicultural Affairs Chair – Introduces himself. Announces that there will be a Talent Show March 26 starting at 7 pm and an after party starting at 9 pm.  If anyone is interested email him at laventrice@gmail.com

Vice President Proctor – Reminds the Senators that it is important to keep up with their office hours. She also states that Student At Large Pittman will not be here because she is at driving school.

Treasurer Baldwin – wanted to make a few quick announcements before getting to the budget. Senator Reid’s Social Work for Haiti project edited on the budget and is requesting 2,000 dollars. Also, Alpha Psi Omega has been moved to the Ensemble List.

Attorney General Bettis – IPP dinner is at 5 PM Feb 24 and you need to RSVP no later 15th. Bettis also brought High Education Flyers and passed them around.

Chief Justice Al-Greene – Gumbo Chili Cook-off is coming up and if you are willing to help contact Senator Perry

Leisure Studies Association Representative –It is at the Beau Rivage where careers in therapeutic recreation are discussed.

Senator Beovich – Makes a movement to approve $2,000 to the Social Work Student Organization

Senator Perry – Makes movement to open discussion for the Southerners. Perry asks why is there are 14 Jag numbers when 17 Jackets are requested. How much are these jackets?

Southerners Representative – They are $110 which includes tax, embroidering, and shipping. There are already new jackets for members, but new members will be added before the next budget meeting and hopefully there will be 16 members plus one alternate.

Treasurer Baldwin – We can’t approve money for non-existent/ future members.

Southerners Representative – The jackets will give us that uniform look during Football Season.

Senator Hilliard – Is there anything cheaper?

Southerners Representative – We found some other options, but the North Face package was a good deal.

Senator Kapadia- Aren’t they closer to about $200 dollars per jacket? It is hard to get jackets approved to non-existent members. Maybe you should explain what you do for the University.

Southerners Representative – The Northface jackets are classy and presentable which is important for the organization. Southerners is the “face of the university” for alumni relations. Southerners speaks to all the prominent people that visit and/or donate.

Senator Kapadia – I believe this is a good investment.

Vice President – Closes the floor for discussion

Senator Guy – States that the amount is high for jackets and believes the money would go farther with ooze ball.

Senator Reid – States that the rules would have to be suspended to pass this appropriation

Treasurer Baldwin – The only reason why this organization is being brought up is that there is no documentation for projected expenses.

College of Democrats Representative – The expenses will be for promotion of safe sex including pamphlets and condoms.

Senator Perry- Have we ever sponsored handing out condoms before?

Senator Guy – So the money is going to 168 condoms? Do you just hand them out?

College of Democrats Representative – Yes we hand them out to students.

Senator Calhoun – How do you hand them out? With pamphlets?

College of Democrats Representative – We hand them out with the pamphlets.

Senator Smith – Makes motion to approve $74.89 to approve College of Democrats money for uniforms and not condoms.

Vice President Proctor – This organization has not been registered for three semesters. How will we know this organization will generate enough interest and succeed?

USA Show Choir Representative – we created a facebook interest group and followed that up with a meeting where 40 potential members showed up. Also, high school seniors that have committed to USA have also generated a lot of interest. This could be a major group to show off the Music Department.

Senator Beovich – Points out that we have already voted on suspending rules.

Vice President Proctor – Denies the motion; failure to make movement in timely fashion

Senator King – Moves to open discussion on USA Trumpet Ensemble. He states that he has seen the ensemble for 3 years and asks why it has never been registered.

USA Trumpet Ensemble Representative – States that has never had a need to be registered and that the organization has been around and generating interest for the past 4 years. This year they have been invited to this prestigious competition in Australia. It is a huge honor.

Senator Guy- Point of Inquiry: How do organizations know when/ how to register?

Dean Mitchell – It is really up to the organization. The forms are in the campus involvement and you need to register to be a student organization

Senator Smith – This organization is different from the others.

Senator Hall – Agrees with Senator Smith. She also stresses to the Senate that to get this level of recognition is a huge honor and could possibly help with international recruiting for the school.

Vice President Proctor – Points out that it will definitely cost for more that $2000 to get a trumpet ensemble to Australia.

USA Trumpet Ensemble Representative – It is going to coast 26,500 dollars total, but we are putting on many fund raisers and gathering donations to make this possible.

Southerners Representative – We need a sponsorship for Oozeball. It is the single largest event on campus. It is a volleyball tournament in a huge mud pit. It has been going on for 22 years.

Vice President Proctor – If SGA sponsors Oozeball can we still have 2 free teams?

Southerners Representative – Our biggest cost are for t-shirts and food. It is definitely more of than we take in. We just ask for SGA to make up the difference ($4,920).

Miss USA Pageant Representative – We accidently had this under co-sponsorship but, we really need this under appropriations since the event already occurred. We need the money to rent out the facility (Laidlaw Performing Arts Center) and pay for certain things for the girls.

Colleges Against Cancer Representative – Colleges Against Cancer is putting on  Relay for Life which is a 6 am – 6 pm walk that raises money for the fight against cancer.

Dean Mitchell – Where does the money go? Because SGA does not give just donations.

Treasurer Baldwin – Can we purchase advertisement?

Dean Mitchell – That sounds good.

Senator Guy – Who is paying for the bands?

Colleges against Cancer Representative- They are nonprofit bands.

Senator Perry – Makes movement to co-sponsor $2,000 dollars worth of advertisements for Relay for Life

 Latin American Student Association Representative- We put on different dances and encourages members to come out and celebrate with the organization.

Philosophy Club Representative – We have two banquets that are great opportunities for philosophy students especially because there are some big names in attendance.

Randy Hunter – The money would be used to move dirt behind the fraternity houses to make fields for club sports.

Vice President Proctor – Is there anywhere else you can get funding other than SGA?

Randy Hunter – This has been sort of a last resort plea.

Senator Guy – I think this will increase the security for places such as the sorority houses. Why isn’t the University funding this?

Dean Mitchell- The University is on an agenda and unfortunately this isn’t high on the agenda.

Vice President Proctor – What is the university prioritizing right now?

Dean Mitchell – I’m not part of that committee. You would have to talk to Dr. Smith.

Senator Guy – Can we make a fund, like we did with the SGA Pavilion?

Vice President Proctor – We can’t indebt a future senate.

Senator Beovich – Can we just make one field?

Vice President Proctor – I’ll bring this up when I go to lunch with President Moulton tomorrow.

Dean Mitchell – I’m not sure if that will accomplish anything, but you can try. The University does not have a lot of extra funding right now.
