Officer Reports

President Gardner – No report

Vice President Proctor – I just want to remind all senators they need 20 office hours. Also, I wanted to thank Student at Large Pittman for an amazing IPC Dinner. It was definitely a success.

Treasurer Baldwin – There are several things that we need to discuss tonight. The club sports council would like us to amend a rule to change the funding for travel. The Long boarding club has closed shop so we need to resend the money that we funded them. We also need to make an amendment that will change the date that appropriation packets are due. I would like to see the packets in by the preceding Monday instead of Friday. This will give us a few extra days to make the binders and smooth out some of the details. Lastly, Campus Involvement would like their Senate Project discussed as well as Senator Jones’ Golf Cart Project.

Attorney General Bettis – All senators going to Higher Education I need help with organizing the refreshments and handing out the T-shirts (shows the Senate the new T-shirts). We will be leaving UCON at 8am and then leaving Montgomery to head back around 2 pm.

Chief Justice Al-Greene – I encourage everyone to join our team for the Chilli- Gumbo Cookoff this Saturday. Even if you don’t want to be part of them team, just go and vote for us!

Student At Large Pittman – Thanks to all who made the IPC Dinner a success.

Committee Reports

Senator Sanders – Rules Committee needs to meet for a few minutes after the meeting

Dean Mitchell – I need some volunteers to take a tour with the Dinning Services. They are going to Southern Mississippi on March 24th from 2:30 -7:30. They are going to observe the “Fresh Food concept” and all participants get a free meal. Also, between March 24and 25 there will be a survey eligible to all non-greek students that will be asking questions on your perception of Greek Life here at USA.

New Business

Senator Guy – Makes a movement to open the floor for discussion of the Student Veterans Organization

Vice President Proctor – If you have any questions the representative is here tonight. So be sure to ask.

Senator Guy – How much are you requesting?

Student Veterans Organization Representative - $1,052

Vice President Baldwin – If we were to fund the money we would have to suspend the 3 Semester Rule.

Chief Justice Al-Greene – Reads Rule 700.1.1

Senator Sanders – Closes the floor for discussion of the Student Veterans Organization

Senator Gessner – Objects. Should we take this on as a Senate Project? Or would it better to be appropriate the money? What is the best way?

Treasurer Baldwin – I would prefer to appropriate the money because we do have extra money in that account.

Student Veterans Organization Representative – I would prefer it to be a Senate Project simply because that would give us Senate help and backing.

Treasurer Baldwin – You would still have all the Senate help and support, the money would just come from a different account.

Senator Guy  - I move to suspend Rule 700.1.1

Senators in Favor - Beovich, Guy, Perry, reed, Gessner, Langan, McCants, Macon, Mahan, Miner, Sanders, Smith, Stewart, Fowler, Jones, King, Tanner, Schneider, Pearson, Carlson, Youngblood, Broach, Riner, Richardson, Thomas, Lebron, Wolf, Hillard, Hall, and Kapadia

Senators Against – N/A

Senators the Abstained – N/A

MOTION PASSED BY ROLL CALL VOTE

Senator Mahan – I move to appropriate $1,052 to the Student Veterans Organization.

MOTION PASSES BY ACCLIMATION

Senator Thomas – I would like to open the floor for discussion of the Club Sports Travel Appropriations application.

Treasurer Baldwin - Basically, they would like us to be more lenient on travel funds, so their council could strictly enforce they money given out.

Senator Guy – Is there a cap for the funds? Because this could potentially be very expensive. Things add up.

Treasurer Baldwin – They would put in a request at the beginning of each semester.

Chief Justice Al-Greene – This is very different than the regular funding.

Treasurer Baldwin – Their council is going to be very strict on them. They are going to need proof such as documents, receipts, ect. This money will come out of the appropriations. We would have to make an amendment

Senator Guy – Closes the floor for discussion of the Club Sports Travel Appropriations Application.

Senator Jones – I would like to open to the floor for discussion for the Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Cart.

Senator Jones – This golf cart would be to the benefit to all the intramural athletes. Right now if a player gets injured there is little accessibility for paramedics to reach them – which is very detrimental to their condition. With the help of Chief Gamache we decided that a golf cart with an added on stretcher would be the best course of action. There is a definite need in the student body for this. When the Golf Cart is not used by the intramurals, SGA could use it to hang sheet signs or any other activities.

Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Cart Representative - This golf cart will also be a part of the teaching process for paramedics here at South. Our job is to teach and to serve. Without the appropriation we simply could not find the funding for the cart.

Vice President Proctor – Where would you store the cart?

Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Cart Representative – We have found a spot over in the Delta Commons. Chief Gamache and Brain (head of intramurals) have found temporary solutions if a permanent one is not apparent.

Vice President Proctor – Doe you have a set cost?

Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Cart Representative – We are thinking that it should be no more than $2,400. We are looking at used electric powered carts.

Vice President Proctor – Any questions?

Senator Guy – Are we going to approve the money tonight?

Treasurer Baldwin – It would be better to approve the money when we have a set price.

Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Card Representative – I will go get an invoice if there is appropriate interest.

Vice President Proctor – Requests a show of hands of Senators that are interested (all raise their hand)

Senator Jones – Closes the floor for discussion of the Senate Project for Rescue Squad Golf Cart.

Senator Guy – Makes a motion to resend $743.40 from the Long Boarding Club

Senators In Favor – Beovich, Guy, Perry, reed, Gessner, Langan, McCants, Macon, Mahan, Miner, Sanders, Smith, Stewart, Fowler, Jones, King, Tanner, Schneider, Pearson, Carlson, Youngblood, Broach, Riner, Richardson, Thomas, Lebron, Wolf, Hillard, Hall, and Kapadia

Senators Against – N/A

Senators that Abstained – N/A

PASSED BY ROLL CALL VOTE

Senator Sanders – I would like to open the floor for discussion of the Campus Involvements Senate Project.

Treasurer Baldwin – Campus Involvement would like to put up some more security cameras, so in turn they request that we fund a new informational TV that they would like to purchase. It would be 42’ and it would be downstairs in the student center and would have announcements posted on it. They are requesting $2,000.

Senator Guy – Isn’t there already a TV downstairs?

President Gardner – That TV is for the Study Abroad Organization.

Freshman At Large Hillard –Would it not be better to put it upstairs new the informational desk?

Dean Mitchell – That was one idea discussed, but it was believed that there were reasons that this is not possible.

Senator Guy- Moves to close the floor for discussion and appropriate $2,000 to Campus Involvment.

MOTION PASSED BY ACCLIMATION

Senator Reed- Moves to open the floor for discussion of the AAF and AIDS Awareness Poets Appropriations
