America by Air

The National Air & Space Museum opened a new exhibit last year titled, “America by Air.”  We just acquired the companion book (NAS 1.21:2007-571) to the exhibit. It is a great little book full of historic photos and tidbits of information. I really like the section about the Early Years of Air Transportation 1914-1927. What to know more? You can borrow this book and some of our related titles about NASA and flight.

Those Sneaky Americans!

I just got a great document from the Department of Defense, Changes in Espionage by Americans: 1947 – 2007. Written by Kathryn Herbig, this document is a great read if you are interested in spy’s and such.

Highlights

This report documents changes and trends in American espionage since 1990. Its subjects are American citizens. Findings include: since 1990 offenders are more likely to be naturalized citizens, and to have foreign attachments, connections, and ties. Their espionage is more likely to be motivated by divided loyalties. Twice as many American espionage offenders since 1990 have been civilians than members of the military, fewer held Top Secret while more held Secret clearances, and 37% had no security clearance giving them access to classified information. Two thirds of American spies since 1990 have volunteered. Since 1990, spying has not paid well: 80% of spies received no payment for espionage, and since 2000 it appears no one was paid. Six of the 11 most recent cases have involved terrorists, either as recipients of information, by persons working with accused terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or in protest against treatment of detainees there. Many recent spies relied on computers, electronic information retrieval and storage, and the Internet. The current espionage statutes have to stretch to cover recent cases that reflect the context of global terrorism.

Want to know more about “the spying business?” In Gov Docs you will find:

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)

Gov Docs just acquired a number of very interesting publications by OSHA. The first publication, Best Practices for Hospital-Based First Receivers of Victims from Mass Casualty Incidents Involving the Release of Hazardous Substances (L 35.2:H 79/2), covers important issues such as personal protective equipment, training of first receivers, preparedness, response and recovery.

The next guide, Best Practices Guide: Fundamentals of a Workplace First-Aid Program (L 35.8:G 94/3), concerns specific issues such as OSHA requirements, first-aid supplies, first-aid courses, trainee assessment and skills updates. The guide is a quick overview of what you need in the typical workplace.

The remaining two guides, Cadmium (L 35.2:C 11/2004) and Ethylene Oxide (EtO): Understanding OSHA’s Exposure Monitoring Requirements (L 35.2:ET 3), gives details on how to manage these sort of hazards.

Spring Forward…in winter? Move your clocks up on March 9th

Starting in 2007, daylight time began in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. On the first Sunday in November, clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time.

So this year, remember to set your clocks forward one hour on March 9th. Want to know more about Daylight Savings Time? You can visit the website titled, Daylight Time put out by the United States Navy that will give you more details.

Electoral College and Super Delegates – What are they?

I hear this question many times each election year.  In an effort to explain this mysterious process, the National Archives created the U.S. Electoral College  webpage.  On this site, you can find more information concerning the 2008 Presidential Election and section concerning frequently asked questions.
Another question I am starting to hear is; what exactly is a super delegate?  Amazingly, super delegates really have not much to do with the government and more to do with the Democratic National Convention.  The best explanation is at Wikipedia.

The Nation’s Capital and Art: Combining the Two Elements

The U.S Commission of Fine Arts recently released a very impressive Government Document titled, Designing the Nation’s Capital: The 1901 Plan for Washington D.C.We currently have this book in our collection and available for check out. The SuDoc number is FA 1.2:W 27/5.

The original plan for Washington D.C. was first conceived by Pierre Charles L’Enfant in 1791, but by 1901 it had grown into something vastly different than what everyone had in mind. Utilizing the talents of architect, Daniel H. Burnham and artist, Charles F. McKim, the arrangement of the Mall developed into what we see today.

Food Safety: Is Pizza still Safe to eat if it sits out over night?

You have been studying all night for that big test the next day. You and your roommate order pizza at the break of dawn. Exhaustion forces you to bed. You get up the next day and do a little last minute cramming. You are hungry and still in your pajamas; there is no way you are leaving the room to get something to eat. Wait! You remember that last piece of hamburger pizza still in the box on the counter. Should you eat it?

According to the Restaurant and Take-Out Safety Guide put out by the FDA, the answer is, “NO!” If Take-Out food is left in the open for more than two hours, throw it away!

Alabama and Alternative Fuels

Governor Bob Riley announced the coming of Alternative Fuels to Alabama, funded by two grants. The first grant comes from the U.S. Department of Energy and the second grant comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The goal is to have an alternative fuel option along I-65 and I-10. The types of fuel provided at these locations will be E85 and/or B20 Biodiesel.

When do you expect to see these pumps appearing? One station will be the Shell Station in Vestavia Hills. Other locations include: Athens, Cullman and a location yet to be determined in Mobile at both I-65 and I-10. They expect everything to be installed by April 2008.

Want to know more about how the government is working with alternative fuels? Consult the following resources in our collection:

Fire: Prevention and Safety

As everyone has seen in the news, southern California is having a serious problem with fires right now. Do you know what to do if you are faced with a fire in your home or area? Would you know where to begin?

I was unsure of these things myself, so I hunted through our Government Documents to see what I could find concerning fire safety and prevention.

This is what I discovered:

A 13.2: SM 7/12

After the fire: returning to normal (Print only)
FEM 1.102: F 51/2 X

Color Smokey Bear Logo

In addition, come up to the Government Documents Department during the month of November to see the Smokey the Bear Display. We have a small collection of rare documents about Smokey out for you to see. Do you remember the Smokey the Bear Pledge?

I give my pledge as an American to save and faithfully to defend from waste the natural resources of my country – its soil and minerals, its forests, waters and wildlife”

Did reciting the pledge bring back any memories? If so, come by the display to see the Smokey Bear song and other neat items.

Social Security Numbers – Just How Important are they?

If you are curious how important your Social Security Number can be, I can sum it up with just one word – VERY!

To discover how important, visit the New Documents section in Gov Docs and glance at these two pamphlets:

Social Security: Your Social Security Number and Card.
http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html
 SSA 1.19/3:2006

This pamphlet gives you information about your Social Security Card, how to get one if you are an international student and what to do if it is ever lost or stolen.

Social Security: Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number.
http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10064.html
SSA 1.19/3: 2006

This pamphlet goes into more detail in regards to identity theft, how to report it and how to get a new Social Security if you need it.

I have read through these great documents and added useful links to my Del.icio.us Bookmarks. Look under the Social Security category.

Paula Webb, Docs Librarian

Those frequent readers of USA Hot Docs might have noticed a few changes lately. The most dominant being that I am not Vickey, the person who created Hot Docs and kept it up until June of this year.

So then…who am I?

My name is Paula Webb and I am the new Government Documents Librarian. As for a bit of background I can tell you I am a born and raised Mobilian. I have AA degree from Faulkner State University, a BA from Judson College and MLIS from the University of Alabama…Roll Tide!! Now I work for the University of South Alabama Library and I am ready to help you find what you are looking for in Government Documents. My email address is pwebb@jaguar1.usouthal.edu. Send me an email to say a simple, “Hello!” or if you have a government related question, email me that as well and I could use it for a future Hot Docs topic.

To celebrate becoming a new employee at USA, I thought talking about Popcorn and Government Documents would be in order.

Popcorn Workers Lung Disease Prevention Act seemed to be a great place to start.

Popcorn Workers Lung Disease Prevention Act: report, together with minority views (to accompany H.R. 2693) (including cost estimate of the Congressional Budget Office).

As I read through the Popcorn Workers Lung Disease Prevention Act, found a lot of good background information. I have this information linked on my Del.icio.us bookmark page, under the Popcorn Lung tag.http://del.icio.us/paulawebb_govdocs_librarian
