for books, videos, titles and years of subscribed journals, government documents and links to electronic books--all owned [or licensed] by the University of South Alabama. As with all databases, do not use a, an, or the at the beginning of titles and search for authors using last name first. Read the keyword requirements carefully.
This is the most useful utility for finding the specific journals we subscribe to--in which database--as a fulltext version--or on the library's periodical shelves. Search using the journal's title--not the article title.
Register one time. No charge if item is available in Alabama. Articles are often emailed or faxed. Allow a week or more.
ERIC is education's disciplinary index. USA's access can be found under Ebsco on the Articles, Indexes, Databases page of the University Library homepage and in the alphabetical list of databases on that page.

EJ--ERIC contains references and abstracts for journal articles(EJ) from over 980 educational and education-related journals from 1966+.
ED--It also contains citations and abstracts for unpublish documents (ED), such as speeches, conference proceedings, teacher-made curriculum guides and much more. Many of these are now fulltext online. But older ERIC documents(ED) are also available in microfiche by ED number on the Second Floor South of the University Library.
ERIC Digests are:
* short reports (1,000 - 1,500 words) on topics of prime current interest in education.
* targeted specifically for teachers, administrators, policymakers, and other practitioners, but generally useful to the broad educational community.
* designed to provide an overview of information on a given topic, plus references to items providing more detailedTIP: ERIC uses a controlled vocabulary for its subjects, so check the print or online Thesaurus to be sure you are using the correct ERIC term for your topic-- e.g. "multiculturalism" is not a subject heading (also called "descriptor"). Use "cultural pluralism" instead. Use "academic achievement" for "academic success."
TIP: Do not search more than one EBSCO database at the same time you are searching ERIC--the Thesaurus button near the top of the page disappears as do some of the other search helpers!
TIP: Scroll down the search page or use "refine search button" to find other ways to limit and focus your searches, such as selecting only "journal articles" and/or "reports--research/technical" to get "RESEARCH" articles.
Professional Development Collection is also under Ebsco on the page of the University Library homepage. It contains many full-text articles, but is not as large or comprehensive as ERIC.

PsycINFO is under EBSCO Very useful for any counseling or educational psychology topic. It has links to full-text articles in other databases.
TIP: Use the PsycInfo Thesaurus every time you search. e.g. It's not the same as the ERIC Thesaurus because it uses psychological jargon, not educational jargon.
TIP: Use the "Limit Your Search" button to further focus your searches to a certain age group, type of article(in psychology "empirical" is the word it uses for primary "RESEARCH"), language, etc.
SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCO): covers social sciences
Academic OneFile The newest of the Gale/InfoTrac databases. Claims to have largest full text collection of journals across all fields of study.
Expanded Academic ASAP is under Gale/InfoTrac As a "general" index it contains citations, abstracts and full-text articles from many different fields of study including the field of Education. Check "refereed" journals.
Academic Search Premier is under EBSCO Like Infotrac's Expanded Academic ASAP it is a "general" index which contains citations, abstracts and full-text articles from many different fields of study including the field of Education.
TIP: Check box "peer reviewed" to get scholarly journals.
Blackwell Synergy has a few education journals in full-text format. Access from Articles, Indexes, Databases page of the University Library homepage.

Medical EducationWiley InterScience contains all the "New Directions" titles in fulltext. It also has a few education journals in full-text format, mostly dealing with higher education.
Science Direct also has a few education journals in full-text format.
LexisNexis Its strength is in its coverage of full-text newspaper articles, statistics, news transcripts, laws, court cases, legal journals and government info.
Dissertation Abstracts/Digital Dissertations contains citations and abstracts of dissertations and masters' theses. For those completed at South Alabama, full-text electronic access is free online. For dissertations and theses done at other universities, it offers easy payment options, then electronic access.
TIP: You might try Interlibrary Loan to see if you can get free access to dissertations and theses before you shell out the dough. Some libraries put their theses and dissertation in the stacks and are available for check out, some don't.
SportDiscus - under EBSCO on the Articles, Indexes, Databases page of the University Library. Its strength is especially for HPELS related topics.
Mental Measurements Yearbook - online under Electronic books on the Homepage on the SilverPlatter platform
The Education book collection is divided with some in the Instructional Media Center on First Floor North and some in the Bookstacks on Fourth Floor North. Be sure to check the location code on the catalog record.
The Library has begun a small Juvenile collection housed in the Instructional Media Center to the right of the entrance doors.
