Administrative Structure

The College is organized to address multiple functional dimensions while using various leadership structures. In business terms, this model is referred to as a balanced matrix and works especially well in responding to shifting customer preferences, short design-to-market cycles, first-time quality, multi-version production, personalized customer service, demands for expedited delivery and rapid assimilation of new technologies, and needs to foster creativity and innovation and to react quickly to competitive developments. Strategic components of the model include: flatter, decentralized structures, redesigned work processes to decrease fragmentation across functional lines, process teams and cross-functional workgroups, partnerships with key informants, an empowered staff, a sophisticated electronic information system, and clear accountability for results.

Specifically, it is designed to: (a) promote efficiency and responsiveness by all units of the College; (b) manage a strong discipline-based set of programs; (c) increase our research capacity and productivity; and, (d) focus the impact of our outreach activities. The primary administrative functions of the College are shared by the Office of the Dean, Academic Departments, and the Program Faculty. The Dean’s Office is comprised of several offices, including those of the Associate Dean for Academic and Fiscal Affairs, the Associate Dean for Development and External Affairs, the Director of Graduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Assessment and Evaluation. The faculty are organized into three separate departments: Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Studies; Professional Studies; and, Leadership and Teacher Education. Each department sponsors several academic programs with which different faculty members are affiliated.
