Pediatric Inpatient Service
Junior Resident (PL-1) - Senior Resident (PL-2 & PL-3)
 
JUNIOR RESIDENT (PL-1)
 
Patient Care:
1. Gather accurate and complete information about the patient using the following clinical skills
 
  • Medical interviewing
  • Physical examination
  • Diagnostic studies
2. Make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions based on patient information, current scientific evidence and clinical judgment under direct supervision of the attending or senior resident physician
3. Use consultants and referrals appropriately under direct supervision of the attending or senior resident physician
4. Develop and carry out patient care management plans under direct supervision of the attending or senior resident physician
5. Prescribe and perform competently the most common medical procedures considered essential for the scope of practice with the level of supervision as determined by the senior resident or attending physician
6. Counsel patients and families in order to participate actively in their care through the provision of information necessary to understand illness and treatment, share decisions, and obtain informed consent
7. Prioritize multiple tasks to deliver patient care efficiently
   
Medical Knowledge:
1. Use current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care
   
Interpersonal Skills and Communication:
1. Communicate effectively in a developmentally appropriate manner with patients and families to create and sustain a professional and therapeutic relationship across broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
2. Communicate effectively with physicians, other health professionals, and health related agencies
3. Work effectively as a member of a health care team
4. Maintain comprehensive, timely, and legible medical records
   
Practice-based Learning and Improvement:
1. Actively participate in the education of patients, families, and students
2. Acknowledge medical errors and mechanisms for prevention
   
Professionalism:
1. Demonstrate respect for and a responsiveness to the needs of patients
2. Assure continuity of care is maintained by availability and appropriate transfer of information when going off duty
3. Demonstrate high standards of ethical behavior
   
Systems-based Practice:
  Practice cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care
  Advocate for quality patient care and assist patients in dealing with the system complexities
SENIOR RESIDENT (PL-2 & PL-3)
   
Patient Care:
1. Gather accurate and essential information about the patient using the following clinical skills
  • Medical interviewing
  • Physical examination
  • Diagnostic studies
1. Make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions based on patient information, current scientific evidence and clinical judgment with review by the attending physician.
2. Use consultants and referrals appropriately with review by the attending physician.
3. Develop and carry out patient care management plans with review by the attending physician.
