Academic Advising

Academic advising takes place in the different academic departments according to a student’s declared major. Students who have decided on a specific engineering major are assigned to a faculty member who will act as an advisor and mentor. Those who haven’t selected a field of engineering to pursue are designated “Engineering General Studies” students and are advised by the Dean’s Office.

The academic calendar in both the current Bulletin and Schedule of Classes will tell you the dates for departmental advising. Typically, advising is done in November for the following Spring term, in Spring for the upcoming Summer term and in July for the Fall term. To help students stay on track in their degree program, no student can register for classes until he or she has been advised. Only when students meet with their advisor are the “advising holds” removed, enabling students to register. Failure to make or keep an advising appointment can mean difficulty in getting into required courses.
