Note: The following reflects the requirements of the 2009-10 Bulletin
- 2.0 GPA or better.
- At least 128 hours of required and
elective courses—all
within College of Arts & Sciences. Note: even if all requirements are completed,
the total hours may not add up to the mandatory 128 hours. Please be sure that your total hours
equal 128 hours or greater.
- A minor field, other than English, of the student’s
choosing in which at least 9 hours have been completed in coursework at USA.
- 15 semester hours of 300- or 400-level
courses in English at USA. A minimum of 32 hours of 300- or 400-level courses in any field must be completed
at USA.
- 36 semester hours of EH courses (not counting freshman composition)
taken from A-F below. A grand total of four 200-level courses can count toward
this requirement.
- Portfolio submitted in major’s final (graduating) semester of English coursework.
Confer with the instructor or department chair prior to taking
special topics courses to see if they satisfy Requirements B, C, or D.
A. Survey Sequence: 215/216, 225/226, or 235/236.
B. At least one Literature prior to 1660: 310, 314, 315, 321, 322, 323, 324, 461, 465, 467, 470, 471, 472.
C. At least one British or American Literature 1660-1900:331, 332, 334, 340, 342, 343, 351, 352, 353, 354, 462, 474, 475.
D. At least one 20th Century Literature: 360, 361, 367, 369, 463, 468, 476, 478, 479.
E. At least one of the following courses in Criticism, Theory, Rhetoric: 402, 421, 422.
F. Six additional “elective” English courses:
These can be taken from the lists above, but cannot be used to satisfy requirements A-E. (Also, see notes above regarding limits on
200-level classes.)
G. Mandatory: At least three 400-level EH courses are required. NOTE: These need not be additional 400-level courses, but can be used to satify requirements B-F.
