Year End Summary
of the
Salary and Fringe Benefits Committee

After becoming Interim Chair of the committee replacing Len Aldes, we had our one and only meeting on January 16, 2004. During his tenure Dr. Aldes formulated several ideas which he presented to Administration, in particular Wayne Davis.During our January meeting, we discussed several issues that the Salary and Fringe Benefits Committee felt were relevant and worth pursuing. Among these were projects Dr. Aldes was already pursuing:

  1. Provide University incentives for participation in long term health care programs such as weight loss, exercise, and diabetic control.
  2. Decrease the cost of the health plan by regulating its use, i.e. limiting the use of the emergency room as a clinic for non-emergent problems.
Other topics that were discussed were:
  1. Revisit or complete research into salary inequities, i.e. women salary’s, senior faculty salaries compared to new hires.
  2. Discuss setting up a mechanism for bonuses throughout the University. This in turn led to a discussion of research in the University and a discussion about the Research Park.
  3. Ask the Senate if they would like a presentation about the Research Park including its future and how it will relate to the Faculty.
  4. Compare matching funds on retirement plans (e.g 401C3) with other universities.
  5. Revisit the dental plan.

Of these later ideas, #1, 2 and 4 will need to go through the Faculty compensation committee chaired by Dr. Covey. On February 2, 2004 I met with Wayne Davis. We discussed some of these topics. He stated that he and the President of the University were very interested in pro active health incentives. He provided some information about where they hoped to go with this program, such as providing space for exercise programs, a small clinic for nursing personnel to check diabetes and hypertension. We also discussed the use of incentives to encourage follow through on these long term health care ideas. No time table has as yet been established.
