The USA Honors Program attracts the best and brightest students to campus each year. Students in all academic units and many different majors participate in this program and add to the accomplishments each year. The Honors Program seeks to provide a greater array of opportunities to these talented students so that they might reach their full potential, earn prestigious national awards and scholarships, and bring recognition not only to themselves but to the university. At the core of the program honors experiences--undergraduate research, service-learning and study abroad. Many faculty across the university generously give their time and talent to the Honors Program by mentoring these students and directing their thesis work or teaching honors courses.
To help support this growing and successful research focus the Honors Program held a creative fund raising event which we hope will become an annual event, the 12 th Night Celebration. This Mardi Gras style tableaux was held on January 6 th, 2012, the 12 th Night after Christmas. The Honors students prepared a fun and entertaining show to consider the curious theme this year of “12”. All proceeds go to support research and travel for the students in the Honors Program. It is also hoped that the Honors Program will become a more visible part of the university and more faculty will join us as mentors, seminar instructors and help recruit more talented students for the program. We had almost 70 guests, including faculty, administrators, community members, and members of the University of South Alabama Foundation. We raised approximately $700 in this first effort, and are very pleased that the students played such in integral part in starting this fund.
Thank you very much to all who participated!
