Dr. Valerie Bryan is an Assistant Professor of Social Work in the USA Social Work program. Dr. Bryan received the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (1993), the MSW (1998), and Ph.D. in Social Work (2005) from the University of Kentucky. While completing her doctorate at Kentucky, she developed an interest in program evaluation research, studying substance abuse treatment and child welfare programs and initiatives across the state. Through various state contracts, she conducted studies on drug court treatment effectiveness and on child welfare system components such as post-adoption and child protection mediation programs. These efforts resulted in the submission of many technical reports to state administrators in the hopes of improving existing services for clients. Her peer-reviewed publications also reflect this focus. Her research interests continue in these areas, and the improvement of evaluative methods used for these purposes. Her teaching interests are primarily in the areas of social welfare policy and macro practice, as well as the theoretical foundation of macro social work intervention. Dr. Bryan is an active member of the Council on Social Work Education, the Society for Social Work and Research, and the American Evaluation Association.
