Featuring Respiratory Therapy Educator Preparation Electives

The College of Education, working with the Department of Cardiorespiratory Care at the University of South Alabama offers an innovative Master of Science Degree in Instructional Design and Development (IDD) live and online. This program prepares Registered Respiratory Therapists having a Bachelor’s Degree for the teaching profession. This internationally recognized IDD program uses state-of-the-art technology to deliver high-quality, affordable courses, both live and via Internet, enabling the completion of most of this degree from anywhere in the world. With various elective courses, this program will fulfill the need for RRTs who aspire to teach respiratory therapy at the university and community college levels.

What is Instructional Design and Development?

A degree in Instructional Design and Development (IDD) provides the knowledge and skills required to analyze instructional tasks, design and deliver instructional programs, and perform evaluative procedures on instructional products and services, particularly as they pertain to teaching Respiratory Therapy. The knowledge and skills acquired in this program will help prepare RRTs for a variety of careers in respiratory therapy education (classroom, clinical, and business), and for a Doctor of Philosophy degree for those seeking to continue their education.

What are the goals of the program?
  • Teach in the classroom.
  • Author and proctor laboratory exercises.
  • Provide clinical instruction.
  • Provide patient education, with an emphasis on pulmonary obstructive diseases,
  • Design and administer course outlines, lectures, and examinations.
  • Apply strategies to accommodate individual learning styles.
  • Facilitate and prepare cases in a problem-based learning curriculum.
  • Function as a program director or director of clinical education in a respiratory therapy program.
  • Teach an online course.
  • Interact with respiratory therapy-related professional organizations

Is this Program Right for You?

The job market for graduates of this program is significant. Projections by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) are that 47% of program directors and 34% of the directors of clinical education will be retiring in the period from 2005 to 2015. Recent analysis by the AARC has documented a continual need for therapists, and the schools that prepare them. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has also predicted a significant need for therapists. If you have considered a career in teaching, whether in the classroom, clinic, or industry, this program is right for you.

Why Online?

The IDD online program is structured to accommodate the schedules and needs of therapists who cannot earn their graduate degree in a traditional manner because of family, career, geographical, or time constraints. Flexibility is the key component of this IDD program. Students choose when and where to study, over the course of the week. Many courses are offered online. Some of them are live. Completing the entire didactic portion of the program online is possible. Furthermore, the internship component may be completed at a local respiratory therapy program. The IDD program is designed to offer an opportunity to fulfill educational and professional goals while enabling students to work at their own pace at a time and place convenient to them. In addition to a flexible schedule, contact and interaction with instructors and classmates will be maintained. Additionally, students will have access to the online University Library and advising services. There are no additional charges for out-of-state tuition for online courses.

What are the Program Requirements?
The admissions criteria are:
1) Bachelor’s degree
2) Registered Respiratory Therapist credential
3) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with the writing component, or Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT) with the GRE writing component.
