Web-based Online DPT Curriculum

 

Online Curriculum for Web-based DPT for Licensed Physical Therapists:

In addition to credits from the individual’s entry-level PT degree, PT-related transfer credit and portfolio analysis, a minimum of 20 semester credits of online DPT courses is required for completion of the web-based program. Ten courses (19 credits) are required of all students while at least one elective course, depending on the entry-level degree, must be chosen from the elective section. The curriculum will focus on development and advancement of clinical reasoning skills and incorporation of evidence-based practice (using the most recent clinical evidence) into clinical practice.

A course exploring theoretical aspects of measurement and the role of measurement in physical therapy.

Exercise Physiology
This course reviews the effects of exercise intervention upon human physiology and the acute and chronic adaptations associated with physical activity.

Health Promotion
A course to focus on prevention of impairments, functional limitations, or disabilities by identifying disablement risk factors and providing educational intervention to facilitate a positive change in the health behavior of patients.

Medical Screening
A course focusing on the use of screening tests and clinical tools to enhance the therapist’s role as an independent practitioner with the ability to identify medical conditions of concern that require referral to a physician.

Clinical Reasoning
This course should be one of the first courses taken and will include principles of evidence-based practice, access and evaluation of scientific literature, and application to clinical decision making in specific patient populations.

Professional Issues/Ethics
Discussion of current professional issues including clinical practice, management, legal, ethical/moral and psychosocial topics imbedded within the current health care market faced by health care providers.  This course will include interactive discussions among students and instructor and will include literature to support discussion topics.

Applied Human Movement
This course will focus on recent advances in the understanding of human movement with particular emphasis on biomechanics, kinesiology and motor control.

Advances in Musculoskeletal PT
An interactive discussion and exploration of physical therapy practice for populations with orthopedic disorders, including examination, intervention and outcomes.  The focus will be on evidence-based clinical practice.  Course topics will include updated research on operative and non-operative procedures for the peripheral joints and spine, spinal and peripheral joint diagnostic imaging (radiography), pharmacology, therapeutic exercise, clinical reasoning, and lifespan issues with a focus on geriatrics.

Advances in Neuromuscular PT
An interactive discussion and exploration of physical therapy practice for populations with neuromuscular disorders, including examination through intervention and outcomes.  The focus will be on clinical practice in this population based on evidence. The course will include diagnostic imaging (radiography), pharmacology, therapeutic exercise, clinical reasoning, and lifespan issues with a focus on geriatrics.

Advances in Integumentary PT
An interactive discussion of new developments in skin and wound care with an emphasis on development of a plan of care that evolves over the episode of care, prevention of recurrence, and the interaction with the patient and other health care providers.

Advances in Cardiovascular / Pulmonary PT
An in-depth, interactive discussion of issues related to the examination, evaluation, and plan of care for patients/clients with primary and secondary cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders across the lifespan. Clinical reasoning, pharmacology and imaging techniques will be emphasized.

DPT Directed Study
Directed research or comprehensive review of evidence-based literature completed in a clinical area of interest under the supervision of a faculty mentor.  The student will document incorporation of course content into their current clinical practice. This course may be repeated once with a different focus-topic each time.

DPT Seminars

DPT Seminar  Evidence-Based Practice and Library Research Skills

Discussion of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the importance of literature searching and information management skills. Topics include accessing library resources both online and in print, developing the well built clinical question using PICO, primary vs. secondary research study types, databases searching skills, evaluating research articles, finding relevant information on the Internet, AMA citation style, using citation management software, and copyright issues. This course will include interactive discussions among students and instructor and will include citation literature and other information sources to support discussion topics.         

DPT Seminar - Sports Physical Therapy
A review of physical therapy examination and intervention procedures applied to athletic populations with an emphasis on current literature. Discussion will include on-the-field management various competitive levels, age span of athletes, and male/female athlete differences.  Current topics for injury prevention and preseason/off-season conditioning will also be included.

DPT Elective – PT as Clinical Educator
An interactive course designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the physical therapist in the roles of clinical instructor (CI) and center coordinator of clinical education (CCCE).  Emphasis will be placed on application of teaching and learning principles to the clinical environment. Current evidence related to alternative models of clinical education and student outcomes will be included.  Successful completion of this course will prepare the student to become an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor.
