FTP (file transfer protocol) is simply a procedure to move
your web files from your local computer to a remote
web server where they will be made available to the
Internet. The USA Web Server is a UNIX-based computer,
but any .html, .htm, .jpeg, .gif. .tiff, etc. file can
be transferred from a PC or Mac computer to/from the
web server. (Mac computers will need to use the
Fetch program to FTP their files.) This assumes
that the user has appropriate rights to the directory
on the web server.
You can
transfer files using a modem (28.8 KB or faster is recommended)
or via a direct connection on the campus WAN (wide area
network).
You must
have a USA Webmaster-assigned account on the USA Web
Server to FTP files to it. If you do not have
an account, please see the Web
Publishing Procedures for instructions
about obtaining an account.
University of South Alabama faculty, staff and students
may download the WS_FTP file transfer
protocol program for their non-commercial, personal
use. This Windows-based program will allow you
to transfer files to and from your local PC to a host
web server. You will need a zip program such as PKZIP to unzip the file. See the readme.txt file for installation, setup and run instructions after
you have downloaded the files.
