Student Responsibility and Advising

All Mitchell College of Business students will be assigned a faculty advisor at the conclusion of freshmen or transfer orientation. In addition, the Office of Student Services is available to all students for academic advising and evaluation of their degree-program record. Any questions related to your undergraduate program of study should be directed to the Student Services staff or your faculty advisor.

All students enrolled in the MCOB will be classified as Pre-Business majors until they have declared a major. Majors in the Mitchell College of Business include Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing or General Business. Students may choose from a variety of concetrations within their major. Minors are not required, but students are allowed to declare a minor in a subject area offered outside the College if they choose. After declaring a major, students will be advised by a faculty advisor from that area.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree

All business students are required to take specified courses within the business college and other colleges of the university. Additionally, a major field of study must be selected in either Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing or General Business. The General Business major is reserved for students whose schedules allow them to attend evening classes only. All courses in the Accounting major are also taught during the day and at night, allowing a night-only student to major in Accounting as well. Other major areas are not available in the evening.

A minimum of 128 semester hours with an overall grade-point average of 2.0 is required for graduation. In addition, an overall 2.0 grade-point average is required for all courses in the business core and all courses in the major.

The University of South Alabama residency requirements specifies that students transferring to the Mitchell College of Business complete at least 32 hours at USA. In addition, transfer students must take two writing designated courses, at least six out of the nine required major courses, at least four of eight required minor courses, and MGT 485 in the Mitchell College of Business.

All students must petition for graduation according to University requirements.

Requirements for a degree in the Mitchell College of Business are detailed below. The sequence, as provided, is intended as an example schedule only. Freshman and sophomore students may take lower division courses in any combination that meets prerequisite requirements. Each student must comply with Course Prerequisite Requirements as listed in the course description sections of the current University Bulletin.

Repeat Course Policy

If a course in the Mitchell College of Business is completed with a grade of C or better, the course cannot be repeated for credit. Any grade received will not be counted in the calculation of the GPA.

Requirements for Second Major in Business

Undergraduate students enrolled in the Mitchell College of Business who plan to add a second major to their curriculum must meet all requirements for the second major. Courses included in the business core requirements and the first major cannot be counted toward the second major requirements. A minimum of 15 semester hours in the second major must be taken in addition to degree requirements.

Dual Major Across Colleges

Students enrolled outside the Mitchell College of Business may select a dual major in business. Please meet with an adviser in the Office of Student Services for information.

Minors in the Mitchell College of Business

Students from colleges outside the Mitchell College of Business may elect, with the approval of their department chair, a minor in the Mitchell College of Business. A 2.0 GPA is required for the courses applied toward the minor. Students declaring a minor in marketing must make a grade no lower than C in all marketing courses. Students must complete at least 50 percent of the courses counted toward the minor at the University of South Alabama.

Economics Minor

The designated courses are intended to provide knowledge of economics to support major study in the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Computer and Information Science.
