For students at the Mitchell College of Business, classroom lectures are just the beginning. The real mastery of their business knowledge comes with the hands-on experience gained through the college’s required internship program.

Senior supply chain and logistics management major Jeremy Cliett completed his internship with the Vessel Operations team at APM Terminals in Mobile. Cliett’s responsibilities included conducting vessel inspections, managing radio communications and coordinating real-time operations. He also worked directly with first mates onboard international vessels to verify critical cargo securing procedures.

Cliett gained a 360-degree view of the industry by rotating through gate, yard, rail, maintenance, procurement and client services. A major highlight of his experience included assisting with the rollout of a new gate software system designed to optimize traffic flow. During the rollout, he helped communicate process changes to truck drivers, resolve appointment-related issues and direct drivers to the appropriate resources as they entered the terminal.

"One of the biggest takeaways for me was seeing how communication and coordination across different teams directly impact the efficiency and safety of terminal operations in a fast-paced environment," Cliett said.

This summer, Cliett will continue gaining experience in terminal operations through an internship with Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The Mitchell College internship program ensures all students graduate with a robust resume, a professional network and practical industry skills. By partnering with industry leaders like APM Terminals and Ingalls Shipbuilding, the Mitchell College of Business continues to build a pipeline of elite talent ready to lead tomorrow's global supply chains.
