Joyce Varner Dr. Joyce Varner has been selected for membership in the newly formed Alabama Elder Justice Alliance. This new Alliance of over 35 organizations in Alabama is dedicated to the service and protection of Alabama elders. The mission of this Alliance is to protect the rights of elders, promote and enhance coordination between agencies, strengthen the current systems that are already in place, increase the knowledge and skills of professionals, and develop a statewide advocacy, education and outreach campaign. This Alliance is formed through the State of Alabama Department of Senior Services under the direction of Mr. Neal Morrison, Commissioner and Ms. Robyn James, Director of Elder Rights Division. Dr. Varner has spent her entire career dedicated to the education of those who provide care to elders and is a strong proponent of elder rights.

College of Nursing Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Joyce McCullers was awarded the Professional of the Year Award by the Alabama Gerontological Society on March 21st in Birmingham, Alabama. This award is given to an individual employed in the field of aging in recognition of exceptional efforts above and beyond the scope of their job description or duties in enhancing the lives of older Alabamians.
 
   
Josalyn Lofton
"College of Nursing graduate Josalyn Lofton, RN, MSN, ONC, has been recognized by the Alabama Hospital Association as a regional "Hospital Hero" for her contributions to health care excellence. Ms. Lofton is a clinical nurse specialist in orthopedics at USA Medical Center. Lofton is the liaison for orthopedic services and coordinator of all aspects of care for orthopedic patients. "Her positive attitude encourages others, and wherever she is, there is an air of contentment," said Anne F. Carter, USA Medical Center therapy services director. "Her dedication to the health care industry is illustrated through her commitment to patients, her relationship with co-workers and her contagious optimism." USAMC Administrator Beth Anderson (right) presents the award.
 
   
Dr. Leigh Anne Minchew
Dr. Leigh Anne Minchew recently presented her DNP project at Case Western Reserve University and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Dr. Minchew is an instructor and coordinator of the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Track in the Maternal/Child Health Nursing Department. The USA College of Nursing offers our congratulations to Leigh for all her efforts in achieving this milestone in her career.
 
   
Joyce Varner
Dr. Joyce McCullers Varner, Clinical Associate Professor and faculty in the graduate Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program at the USA College of Nursing, has received the prestigious Applied Gerontologist Award by the Southern Gerontological Society. This award is given to someone who has a sustained record of leadership in the field of aging as evidenced by positions of paid employment and/or organizational involvement, recognition in the field as evidenced by awards conferred by related organizations, development of innovative programs such as applications of findings/approaches to research, education, management or services with emphasis on application, and presentations and programs that positively impact on the quality of life of older persons.
 
   
Noretta Walls
Noretta Walls has been selected as a "Top Prof" for the 2008-2009 Mortar Board National Honor Society. Founded in 1918, this national society is represented by USA in the fields of government, education, medicine, research, music and many others. The Mortar Board award is based on the exceptional contributions by the faculty to the University of South Alabama as well as for their service to and support of our students. Noretta was described as "motivating students to excel academically, encouraging service to the community while challenging them to develop personal values and leadership skills."

Lynn Chilton Dr. Lynn Chilton, professor and coordinator of the graduate gerontological nurse practitioner program in the College of Nursing at the University of South Alabama, has won the prestigious Excellence in Geriatric Education Award from the National Conference of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners (NCGNP), a national professional organization for nurse practitioners who care for geriatric and older adults.  
   
Carolyn White

The American Association of Diabetes Educators, AADE, has named Dr. Anita King, Clinical Associate Professor of the University’s College of Nursing, as an American Association of Diabetes Educator Fellow.

King was one of the eight certified diabetes educators from the United States inducted as a Fellow during the association’s 36th Annual Conference held in August in Atlanta. As a long-term certified diabetes educator and family nurse practitioner, King has demonstrated sustained, significant
