The University of South Alabama Archaeology Museum opens early in 2012 in an 8,000 square foot facility. With an engaging permanent exhibit, rotating exhibits, a membership program, and educational programming for children and adults, the museum offers the public an opportunity to share in the ongoing discovery of the region’s collective heritage.
The Archaeology Museum showcases artifacts from the Gulf Coast and covers over 12,000 years of prehistory and history. Artifacts are contextualized using a series of life-size scenic representations depicting archaeologists at work and glimpses into the ways of life of ancient Woodland cultures, mound-building Mississippian peoples, early French settlers, and an African-American family after the Civil War.
The foundation for the museum content is the fieldwork, research and scholarship conducted by the University’s Center for Archaeological Studies. Since its inception in 1992, the Center has conducted field studies and researched hundreds of sites in southwest Alabama and surrounding areas. Together, the Museum and Center promote the archaeological study and appreciation of the region's prehistoric and historic past, disseminate information about the region's archaeology, and preserve archaeological evidence of the region's past for future study, use, and enjoyment.
Both the Museum and Center operate under the auspices of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, in the College of Arts and Sciences. The University of South Alabama offers undergraduate and graduate programs to over 15,000 students and is the largest educational institution of higher learning in southwest Alabama. The mission of the University of South Alabama is to offer high-quality programs of teaching, research, public service, and health care that create, communicate, preserve, and apply knowledge in service to the people of Alabama as citizens in a global community.
