Arts & Sciences Departmental Scholarships
 
The number of scholarships awarded each year and the dollar amount for each scholarship may vary yearly depending on available funds.

Department of Chemistry
 

Chemistry Scholarships

Up to four scholarships of $1,500 each are awarded annually to sophomore and junior Chemistry majors. Recipients have continued support throughout their fourth year of studies provided a satisfactory level of academic performance is met and the availability of funds exists. Inquiries should be directed to the Departmental Office, Room 223. (251) 460-6181.
 

The Williams-Phillips-Van Hook Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship for students in Chemistry or College of Nursing is available to students who have completed a minimum of two semesters of study in Chemistry or Nursing with preference given to Chemistry students. Inquiries should be directed to the Chemistry Departmental Office, Room 223. (251) 460-6181.
 
 
Department of Communication
 

Michael S. Hanna Endowed Communication Scholarship

The Michael S. Hanna Endowed Communication Scholarship's purpose is to encourage communication students at the University of South Alabama an opportunity to excel in their track of study by awarding a monetary scholarship. Applicants should meet the following criteria: (1) Hold junior/senior status with a declared major in Communication, (2) Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, (3) Demonstrate financial need. Materials submitted with the application include the scholarship application, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act form, faculty letter of recommendation (1), professional/personal letter of recommendation (1), and a 750 word or less essay explaining the applicant's leadership, community and campus involvement, and career goals.
 

John M. Will Foundation Scholarships

Up to two scholarships are awarded to college students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism; those persons now employed in the journalism field who wish to further their studies by graduate or extended courses of instruction are also eligible. Applicants must fulfill the John M. Will Foundation requirements. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Jim Aucoin in the Department of Communication.
 
 
Department of Dramatic Arts
 
Application forms and audition dates are available in the Department office and online on the Department’s web site. Inquiries should be directed to the Department office by calling (251) 460-6305.
 

Laidlaw Performance Scholarship

Donated by John Laidlaw, a number of scholarships in the $500-$1,000 range are awarded annually. Interviews, auditions, GPA and recommendations required. Drama faculty select awardees.
 

Alabama Lyric Theatre Scholarship

Established to support musical theatre students. At lease one scholarship of from $750 - $1,000 is awarded based upon interview and audition. Similar format GPA and recommendations required to those used for the Laidlaw Scholarship. One audition and application will allow student to be considered for either this or for both of the purely performance based scholarships listed here.
 

Danny Conway Memorial Award

Carmen Conway and her daughter fund the award in honor of their son and brother. It provides $500-$800 to a junior or senior drama major, with emphasis in performance.
 

Gerrells/Jackson Award

Awarded to drama students in the top 10% of their class, with at least three semesters of study at USA. GPA and drama activities at USA determine awardees.
 

Costume and Scene Shop Assistantships

$1,000 awarded each year to drama students in exchange for work in costume and on scene shops. Students must submit applications showing theater experience, GPA, references and interviews.
 
 
Department of Earth Sciences
 
Geology
 

Outstanding Freshman Geology Award

Rock hammer(s) awarded in the Spring Semester to freshman student(s) with the best academic performance in GY 111 and GY 112. Winners need not be geology majors.
 

James E. Denmark Award

Up to $500 awarded in the Spring Semester to the geology major with the highest academic standing after completing the sophomore geology sequence.
 

Desk and Derrick Award

Up to $500 awarded in the Spring Semester to the geology major with the highest academic standing in courses leading to a career in the petroleum industry (GY 344, GY 345).
 

John Faggard Award

Up to $1,500 awarded in the Spring Semester to the geology major with the highest academic standing who is within one year of graduation.
 

Mobile Rock and Gem Society Award

Up to $500 awarded in the Fall Semester to the geology major with the highest academic standing in the Department’s summer field school (GY 480).
 

George Lamb Award

A Bruton-style compass awarded in the Spring Semester to the highest-ranking graduating student.
 

Elliot Hagler Award

Up to a $500 award in the spring semester to the most deserving geology major attending the Department’s summer field school (GY 480).
 

Sedimentology Book Award

A copy of the American Geological Institute’s Glossary of Geology is awarded to the best performing student in Sedimentary Petrology (GY 344).
 
Geography
 

The Geography Atlas Award

Atlases are given to majors who have an overall GPA of 2.5 and geography GPA of 3.0. This is an annual award.
 

Dr. Victoria L. Rivizzigno Endowed Geography Scholarship

Given to majors who have an overall GPA of 3.0 and Geography GPA of 3.0.
 

Dr. Glenn R. Sebastian Endowed Geography Scholarship

 

Eugene M. Wilson Geography

Up to $250 is awarded each Spring Semester to an outstanding geography graduate.
 

Meteorology

 

Exxon/Mobil Academic Award in Meteorology

A monetary award to the top junior in meteorology.
 

Exxon/Mobil Outstanding Senior Meteorology Award

A gift award to the top senior in meteorology who has a high academic average and has made a significant contribution to meteorology at USA.
 
 
Department of English
 
Janet Mahan Summer Humanities Scholarship
Funds summer tuition for a high school teacher of English or history returning to pursue additional work in either discipline. Contact the History Department to apply.
 
Shelley Memorial Scholarship
$500 Scholarships will be awarded Fall Semester to an undergraduate and a graduate student for creative writing. Applicant must be full-time, have taken one poetry course prior to applying and have 2.5 or above GPA.
 
Katherine Lawrence Richardson Scholarship
$1,000 to be applied toward tuition and fees awarded to a rising senior. Applicant must be full-time English or secondary education major and have 2.5 or above GPA.
 
Dr. Patricia Stephens Memorial Scholarship
$450 awarded to an outstanding graduate student seeking a Master’s Degree in English. Applicant must have 3.5 or higher GPA.
 
Angelia and Steve Stokes Scholarship
Applicants must be full-time, have taken one poetry or fiction course prior to applying, and have 2.5 or above GPA. Applicant must submit 15 pages of prose fiction, creative non-fiction, or 10 pages of poetry. This award includes undergraduate and graduate categories. $1,000 per award.
 
Lloyd Dendinger Memorial Scholarship
Named after a former faculty member in the English Department, the scholarship provides a $50 annual award for an outstanding graduate student essay in American literature.
 
English Department Endowed Scholarship
Provides an annual award of $400 to an outstanding second-year graduate student who is nominated by the faculty.
 
Bobby Holmes Memorial Scholarship
Poet and writer Bobby Holmes was student editor of the journal Negative Capability, as a USA student. Donated by his parents and friends in his memory, the scholarship provides a yearly stipend for the Editor-in-Chief of Oracle, the English Department’s student literary journal.
 
Jean McIver Scholarship
Applicants may be a rising junior or rising senior English major or African American Studies minor who demonstrates high academic achievement and has a 2.5 or above GPA. $500.
 
 
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
 

Russian Language Scholarship

Up to $400 awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or senior studying Russian. Nominated by Russian faculty.
 

Felicia Cooley Award

$200 awarded each spring to an outstanding student in intermediate Spanish to use toward his or her study abroad experience.
 

French Language Scholarship

Up to $900 awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or senior studying French. Nominated by French faculty.
 

Graciella Blanco Award for Spanish

Up to $900 awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or senior studying Spanish. Nominated by Spanish faculty.
 

Goessling Scholarship for German

Up to $900 awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or senior studying German. Nominated by German faculty.
 

Patricia L. Dyess Scholarship

$500 to $2,500 awarded to one or more outstanding juniors or seniors studying any language and also demonstrating financial need.
 

Margaret Pol Stock Foreign Language Scholarship

Up to $600 awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or senior demonstrating excellence in two languages. Nominated by Foreign Language faculty.
 

Passau Exchange Scholarship

Up to $1,000 awarded each spring to an outstanding upper-level German student for study at the University of Passau in Germany.
 

Scholarships for Study in Greece

$1,000 from AHEPA for semester or summer study in Greece.
 
 
Department of History
 
Senior History Scholarship
A tuition scholarship of $1,000 awarded to a senior history major who has a distinguished academic record. Preference is given to students who have not previously had substantial scholarship aid at the University of South Alabama and who have been active in Phi Alpha Theta.
 
The Macy Wims Reid Endowed Scholarship in History
A tuition scholarship of $500 awarded to a high achieving junior or senior history major with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
 

International Studies Program

 

Caldwell Endowment

The Caldwell Endowment is $3,000 awarded annually in the Spring Semester to fund overseas travel for any Arts and Sciences major. Contact Dr. Steve Morris, Director of International Studies Program for details and application.
 
 
Department of Marine Sciences
 

Bullard Scholarship

This award ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 for students in Marine Science conducting research on economically valuable marine species. Awards are made for students in the final phases of their degree/research program.
 

Barber Fellowship

A supplemental award of $3,000 added to Departmental Fellowship for incoming Graduate Student.
 

ACES Fellowship

This award is normally for $1,000 to $3,000 added to Departmental Fellowship for incoming Graduate Student.
 

Nelson Awards

One outstanding Ph.D. student award of $1,000 and one outstanding Masters student award of $500, awarded annually by the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
 
 
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
 

Victorino S. Blanco Memorial Scholarship

$500 awarded in the late Spring Semester to a graduating senior MA/ST major with the highest GPA.
 

Chris Nash MA/ST Scholarship

$500 awarded in the Spring Semester to a math or statistics major with the highest score in the annual Math competition.
 

Sushila Mishra Memorial MA/ST Scholarship

$350 awarded in the late Spring Semester to a math or statistics major. Nominated by MA/ST faculty committee.
 

Departmental Scholarships

Scholarships of $1,500 each are awarded in the late Spring Semester to sophomore and junior MA/ST majors. Contact the Math Department to apply.
 
 
Military Science
 

ARMY Scholarships

ARMY ROTC offers 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 year scholarships for all majors. Our Department has an unlimited number of scholarships for qualified nursing majors. Scholarship applicants must be U.S. citizens, pass a physical examination and have at least a 19 ACT and 2.5 cumulative GPA. All of the scholarships pay full tuition and fees, a $350-$550 per month stipend and a $900 per year book allowance. Sixty percent of our scholarship recipients also receive a free dorm room. Air Force Scholarships

AIR FORCE ROTC offers 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5 and 2 year competitive scholarships in all majors, plus 3, 2.5, 2, and 1.5 year non-competitive scholarships for nursing majors. Scholarship amount of $15,000, $9,000, $3,000 and a few unlimited are available. Additionally, dorm scholarships, $750/year book allowance and $250-$400 monthly stipend is paid to contracted cadets.
