Image Information

Image manipulation is an important process in gathering materials for news release creation and pushing stories and other information out to the university users. These images need to follow web standards as well as sizing standards for the various locations that the news feeds will appear.  Detailed information on preparing images for the web, including format options, saving images for the web and cropping and resizing images, can be found with the CMS training resources here. However, below is a quick summary of that information.

Important tip: When saving for web use, always work from a copy of your original high-quality image.  Keep the original in case you need it again.  Once an image is compressed, the extra data (and image quality) is discarded.

Original Image Type Image Resolution (color profile RGB) Possible Saved Image Types
.JPG minimum of 72 pixels per inch .JPG or .JPEG or .PNG
.JPEG minimum of 72 pixels per inch .JPG or .JPEG or .PNG
.PNG minimum of 72 pixels per inch .JPG or .JPEG or .PNG
.GIF minimum of 72 pixels per inch .JPG or .JPEG or .PNG

Image dimensions: You should always reduce the dimensions of images that are thousands of pixels wide. For OU campus, images typically do not need to be more than 1,000 pixels wide. Most images follow a responsive rule which allows users to view your news account across all platforms.  Please consult the table below for specific image dimension information.  Other documentation has been provided in the webmaster resources under training and tutorials on the Web services site

 Images
 Large Featured Image   750px height  x 350px width   (750x350)
Thumbnail Image   275px height x 175px width   (275x175)

Images that appear within the story's content will have a variable height and width, however please follow web standards-- including the correct web resolution and formatting standards; also please keep your images variable to the content. Take a look at the training examples section to see example of stories with specific image widths and heights.
