A team from the USA College of Engineering was one of three top award winners at the 2nd Annual Cast in Steel Competition. The event, which is sponsored by the Steel Founders’ Society of America (SFSA) is intended to promote student interest in careers in the steel casting industry. The year’s competition involved 18 teams from colleges throughout North America. Each team was required to design and manufacture a Bowie knife. Each knife was subjected to performance testing for cutting, chopping and durability. Along with the knife, each team produced a written technical report and video report on its entry.

The University of South Alabama Cast in Steel Team partnered with the Howell Foundry LLC to produce "Model J28" bowie knife. The team received the Best Video Award, one of the three main awards for the competition.

The student team members for 2020 were Bryant Baldwin (ME), Rachel Chai (CE), Briana Cunningham (ME), and Joshua Morgan (ME). Each team member received a $500 prize with award. The faculty advisor to the team was Dr. Melike Dizby-Onat.
