Archduke Trio presents "Tangos and Mendelssohn" to open MAS Season August 28
Posted on August 21, 2014 by Keith Bohnet

The Archduke Piano Trio, consisting of USA professor Robert Holm, violinist Enen Yu
and cellist Guo-Sheng Huang, plays Tangos by Astor Piazzolla, Miguel del Aguila and
Peter Kohrman, followed by Felix Mendelssohn's famous Piano Trio no. 1 in D minor.
Tickets for this Musical Arts Series event will be sold at the door only. Admission
is $8 general and $5 for USA faculty & staff, USA students, youths under 18 and all
senior citizens (cash or check only). Persons needing more information about this
event or in need of special accommodation may call (251) 460-7116 or (251) 460-6136.
The program opens with USA music major Peter Kohrman's El Ultimo Baile, a tango for
piano trio that was chosen as winner in composition for the state of Alabama by the
Alabama Music Teachers Association in 2013-2014. Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla
will be featured next with Cinco Piezas (1980), originally for solo guitar and Oblivion,
first made famous from the soundtrack of the 1982 film "Henry IV, the Mad King." The
first section of the program concludes with contemporary Uruguayan composer Miguel
del Aguila's Tango trio.
The program will conclude with Felix Mendelssohn's famous Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor,
op. 49, which Robert Schumann reviewed after its premiere in 1839, praising Mendelssohn
as "the Mozart of the 19th century, the most illuminating of musicians."
