The University of South Alabama Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band will jointly present their first concert of the year on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m.  The event will take place in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall, conducted by William H. Petersen and Michael Phillips.  Arrive early for what appears to be a great concert by USA's bands!

Tickets for this Musical Arts Series event will be sold at the door only.  Admission is $8 general and $5 for USA faculty & staff, USA students, youths under 18 and all senior citizens (cash or check only).  Persons needing more information about this event or in need of special accommodation may call (251) 460-7116 or (251) 460-6136.

About the concert

The USA Symphony Band, under the direction of Dr. Michael Phillips, will perform works including "Alleluia,! Laudamus Te" by Alfred Reed,  "Pageant" by Vincent Persichetti, "On A Hymnsong Of Philip Bliss" by David Holsinger , and the "Satiric Dances" of Norman Dello Joio.

Following a brief intermission, the USA Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. William H. Petersen, will begin with "Pas Redoublé" by Camille Saint Saëns and "Divertimento for Band" by Vincent Persichetti, The Divertimento was originally conceived for orchestra, but Persichetti found he had completed the work without an entrance for strings.  This performance of Divertimento for Band honors the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth.

The Wind Ensemble will conclude the concert with "Be Thou My Vision" by contemporary composer David Gillingham, and a suite of music from Gilbert & Sullivan's comic ballet "The Pineapple Poll."
