South Collecting Items for Flood Victims
Posted on August 16, 2016
The University of South Alabama Department of Athletics is collecting donated goods and supplies on behalf of victims of flooding in Louisiana.
A trailer is set up in the Stanky Field parking lot off Old Shell Road, with donations accepted through the weekend. All collected goods will be delivered on Monday to Lafayette, La., in support of the community of fellow Sun Belt Conference member Louisiana-Lafayette.
Members of the South athletic department staff will be on hand to take donations from 7:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, as well as from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. Items requested to help those in need are water, non-perishable canned/dry food goods, clothing — including underwear, shoes and socks — linens and towels, and various items for babies such as clothes, diapers and hygiene products. Other goods being collected will be batteries, toiletries, insect repellant, bleach, cleaning supplies — such as liquid dish and laundry detergent as well as disinfectants — rubber gloves, heavy-duty trash bags, mops and large plastic buckets, sponges, and pet food and pet shampoo.
Not only can items be donated throughout the week, staff will be on hand to collect gifts during the Jaguars’ season-opening soccer match Friday against Samford — kickoff at The Cage is set for 7 p.m. — and leading into the program’s contest with Auburn at 6 p.m. Sunday. Donations can also be made coming to and from the football team’s annual “Fan Day” event, which will be held at the Mitchell Center from 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Individuals interested providing cash in support of relief efforts can do so by visiting www.redcross.org and selecting “Louisiana Floods” when making their donation.
