Global USA Hosts Reception for Japanese Pottery Collection Exhibition

Global USA, in partnership with the Japan-America Society of Alabama, will host an exhibit featuring rare pieces of Satsuma pottery originating from Japan’s Genroku era (1688–1704). A reception is Wednesday, September 2, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in Meisler Hall’s second floor lobby. It is free and open to the public.
Named after the Satsuma region of Japan, this distinctive style is renowned for its dark-colored clay, dark glazes and intricate, fabric-like patterns elevated by brilliant enamel and gold gilding.
“Global USA at the University of South Alabama is deeply honored to host and display the exquisite Satsuma pottery collection on loan from the Japan-America Society of Alabama,” said Dr. Richard Carter, associate vice president for global engagement. “It is a privilege to display this remarkable collection of authentic Satsuma pottery. Spanning centuries of traditional Japanese artistry, these exceptional pieces stand as a beautiful testament to world-class craftsmanship.”
The Satsuma pottery collection will remain on display in Meisler Hall through the year. The collection was originally donated to the Japanese-America Society of Alabama in 2023 by John Danne in honor of his parents, Art and Jacqueline Danne.
