Students at South and ASMS Showcase Live Advanced Drones

The live demonstration at the University of South Alabama highlighted a large-format autonomous drone carrying out a simulated delivery of an automated external defibrillator, known as an AED, to assist victims of cardiac arrest. Attendees also observed a South student piloting a smaller, agile drone using virtual reality, or VR, goggles for navigation.

Researchers and students from the University of South Alabama and the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science hosted a live demonstration featuring autonomous aerial drones designed to map storm damage, inspect coastal infrastructure and deliver medical supplies during critical emergencies.

University President Jo Bonner and Executive Vice President and Provost Andi Kent shared how the showcase marked a significant milestone for faculty and students at both institutions.

"In a multidisciplinary effort, South is championing high-impact research that directly protects and serves our coastal and small-town communities," Kent said. "The future is now. This showcase proves the depth of Mobile's regional science, technology, engineering and mathematics talent pipeline through the work of South's researchers, students and those of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science."

The Aug. 31 demonstration at South highlighted a large-format autonomous drone carrying out a simulated delivery of an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to assist victims of cardiac arrest. Attendees also observed a South student piloting a smaller, agile drone using virtual reality, or VR, goggles for navigation. They also got to see a display of uncrewed water vehicles.

"A project like this drone is currently in its prototype stage," said Dr. Bhushan Lohar, assistant professor of systems engineering at South. "It will likely take another year of testing before it is fully ready for operational field use."

The showcase highlighted the collaboration between the university and the Alabama School of Math and Science. 

"South's partnership with the Alabama School of Math and Science showcases our commitment to community collaborations," said Dr. Joél Billingsley, USA’s vice president for community engagement. "By bringing high school students alongside South's researchers and students, we are cultivating the next generation of technology leaders and first-responder innovators. The faculty and students are actively shaping the future of public safety in our region."
