Dr. Caroline Janney, professor in history of the American Civil War and director of the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War at the University of Virginia, will deliver the 2026 N. Jack Stallworth Lecture at the University of South Alabama on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center.

Janney will speak on “An End and a Beginning: How Lee's Surrender Shaped the Lost Cause.”

"We are honored to welcome Dr. Janney to Mobile for this year's Stallworth Lecture," said Dr. Timothy Lombardo, associate professor in the USA Department of History. "Her deep expertise on the closing weeks of the Civil War offers vital insight into how historical memory and national narratives were formed during that historic time.”

Janney is a frequent contributor to public history programs on the History Channel, AppleTV+, PBS and CSPAN. She is the author or co-author of eight books on the American Civil War.

The event is sponsored by the USA Foundation and the USA Department of History.

About the Stallworth Lecture:

The annual lecture honors N. Jack Stallworth, a prominent Mobile businessman, philanthropist, and founder of local civic organizations who established endowments supporting Southern history education at the University of South Alabama.
