USA to Host 2018 Alabama Science Olympiad
Posted on October 26, 2017
Middle and high school students from Mobile and Baldwin counties will visit the University of South Alabama on Saturday, March 3, to participate in the 2018 Alabama Science Olympiad regional tournament, which gives students the opportunity to compete in a variety of hands-on science events. This event is being organized and managed by South’s Office of Undergraduate Research. This year’s theme is “Exploring the World of Science.”
“We are pleased and excited to host the 2018 Science Olympiad for the southern region of the state of Alabama,” said Dr. Jack Shelley-Tremblay, director of Undergraduate Research. “I want to encourage every middle and high school student in Mobile and Baldwin counties to form teams and register for the Science Olympiad. It combines the fun of a team sport with the powerful, hands-on learning of a science lab.”
Normal registration fees apply for registrations received by Nov. 1. Late registrations at higher rates are accepted through Dec. 15. Teams can register at http://www.alabamaso.org/registration.html.
The event rotates location each year, reflecting the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology.
“By combining events from all disciplines, the Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation,” Shelley-Tremblay explained. “Through the Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal.”
The state winners will have a chance to compete at the National Science Olympiad at Colorado State University next year.
Science faculty, staff and students from South, and other colleges and local high schools, are invited to volunteer by sending your name, email address and telephone number. Also, community professionals in the sciences and engineering are encouraged to volunteer. Those interested should indicate the number of hours they are available to volunteer, and send their emails to jstremblay@southalabama.edu.
