Dr. Tony G. Waldrop Begins University of South Alabama Presidency
Posted on April 2, 2014

Dr. Tony G. Waldrop today began his first day as president of the University of South Alabama in much the same way he begins most of his days, with a morning walk, only this time without his wife, Dr. Julee Briscoe Waldrop, who is completing her faculty duties at the University of Central Florida and will join her husband in Mobile next month.
Rather than walking with his wife, Waldrop strolled through the USA campus and dropped in on students, faculty and staff at the Student Recreation Center, the Softball Fieldhouse and the Visual Arts Building.
“The University of South Alabama has so much to offer that it’s impossible to cover in a single day,” Waldrop said. “I’m looking forward to becoming better acquainted with USA and the entire community in the days and weeks to come.”
Waldrop was named president of the University on Feb. 6 by a unanimous vote of the USA Board of Trustees, following a nationwide presidential search that began last fall. He has more than 30 years of higher education experience in research, teaching and administration. Most recently, he was provost and executive vice president at the University of Central Florida, with previous stints at the University of North Carolina and the University of Illinois.
“I’ve said all along that it was the people, more than anything else, that attracted me to the University of South Alabama,” Waldrop said. “Today, in my visits with students, faculty and staff, I came away very impressed with how engaged everyone is in USA’s total educational process. It was invigorating and inspiring.”
