Medical Student Receives National Scholarship for Service

Mohammed Ghalib, a third-year medical student at the Whiddon College of Medicine,
has been awarded a 2026-2027 NBME/NMF scholarship in recognition of his commitment
to service and health equity.
Ghalib is one of 20 medical students nationwide selected for the scholarship, which is presented through a collaboration between the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and National Medical Fellowships (NMF).
The scholarship provides $10,000 per year and is renewable for up to three years for eligible medical students enrolled at U.S.-accredited medical schools. The organizations received hundreds of applications for this year's awards.
“I am profoundly grateful to the NBME and National Medical Fellowships for this recognition,” Ghalib said. “The financial burden of medical school is a daunting reality for many students from immigrant or other disadvantaged backgrounds. By easing this burden, this award empowers me to fully dedicate myself to my medical training and my community involvement within the College of Medicine and the Mobile area. It is a true honor to be recognized by organizations that share my dedication to health equity.”
Ghalib has distinguished himself through extensive leadership, advocacy and service at the Whiddon College of Medicine, where he serves as vice president of the Class of 2028, president of the Student Assembly, program coordinator elect at the Student-Run Free Clinic, and an officer in numerous student interest groups.
This year, NBME doubled the number of annual scholarships from 10 to 20, expanding support for medical students at a time when the nation faces a growing physician shortage and many students face significant financial challenges.
The organization is a not-for-profit that develops assessments and learning tools for physicians and other health professionals, with a mission of supporting a diverse, compassionate and effective health care workforce.
