Healthcare Summer Camp Helps Student Find Path to Radiologic Sciences

When Lauren Morse attended the University of South Alabama’s Healthcare Summer Camp in 2023, she was introduced to more than a college campus. She saw the range of healthcare career paths available through the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions.
Morse, who is from Foley, Alabama, is now enrolled at South and applying to the Radiologic Sciences program.
“What I remember most about the Healthcare Summer Camp was getting to know the instructors and the other students while learning about everything the University of South Alabama’s Allied Health College has to offer,” Morse said. “It gave me a better understanding of the different healthcare career paths available.”
The Healthcare Summer Camp was designed to introduce students to healthcare programs and career opportunities while giving them a closer look at South’s health professions programs. For Morse, that experience helped confirm her interest in healthcare and showed her the support available to students.
“The camp helped shape my interest because it showed me that there are many different opportunities in healthcare,” Morse said. “It also reassured me that the instructors are supportive and genuinely want to help students succeed and find the career path that’s right for them.”
Morse said she chose South because of the opportunities available in Radiologic Sciences. The program offers a bachelor’s degree with seven concentration paths, giving students the opportunity to prepare for careers across the medical imaging field.
“I decided to attend the University of South Alabama because it is the only university in my region that offers a bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences with seven different concentration paths to choose from,” Morse said. “It is also only about an hour from my hometown of Foley, Alabama, making it a great fit for me.”
Morse hopes to earn her bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences and specialize in Computed Tomography.
“I would encourage others to consider a career in healthcare because it gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives every day,” Morse said. “Healthcare careers are in high demand, provide excellent job stability, and allow you to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities.”
For the Covey College, Morse’s path reflects the value of early exposure to healthcare education. What began as a summer camp experience has continued into a student’s journey toward a future career in healthcare.
