Student group to present on LGBTQ+ community health needs

The Whiddon College of Medicine student group MedPride & Allies, in collaboration
with the Southwest Alabama Inclusion Project, will present "Appendix Q: LGBTQ+ Community
Health Needs in Southwest Alabama." The event is set for Monday, Sept. 14, from 6:30
to 8 p.m. in the Medical Sciences Building first-floor auditorium.
Lien Kimbell, a fourth-year medical student, said the project's purpose is two-fold: "First, to understand the healthcare disparities that our local LGBTQ+ community faces; and second, to design a template for the local Community Health Needs Assessment to incorporate sexual orientation and gender identity demographics into local population data."
Kimbell added, "The congregate data allows us to see trends of disparities faced by our own community, and the guidelines put forth by this document allow us to change our practices to support these patients."
